Week 6 Discussion Question
W6: Data Collection Tool: Reliability & Validity
In a seamless posting, please incorporate the following into your initial
posting:
Under the heading method and design in your research proposal regardless
of the method/approach used qualitative, quantitative, or mix methods,
you will need to discuss the data collection instrument (tool) you propose
to use to gather data. The word instrument is the general term that
researchers use for a measurement device (survey, questionnaire, test,
interview, observation, etc.). Discuss the instrument you intend to use in
your research proposal and how you intend to address the instrument's
validity and reliability noting the different types of each.
Even though I am doing a research proposal for the first time, this situation alone is very nerve-
racking. Now, that I know from the comments of my rough draft that the person must include
their own critical thinking and back up with reference it makes more sense. I guess in some
ways it is, but it isn’t. I am proposing to do research or advocate for, and the information
provided for the proposal is the same and you would do your research paper. You are using your
findings as proof or backup for your proposal or paper. I am used to using material that I find to
back up my topic, like published instruments.
As stated in the learning material, “These are
instruments others have developed and believe to be useful for research.” (Learning Material,
n.d.).
I am thinking that I am going to use the data-gathering methods. I found a lot of information
from other people writing research papers that can help me on my research proposal. I
understand that the information that I have undercover to aid me has to ensure that is has any
validity and reliability towards the topic that I am proposing to research. As stated in the
learning material, “Reliability and validity ensure that the results of a study are as accurate and
applicable as they can be and that the studies are conducted without bias and error.” (Learning
Material, n.d.)
Just like when somebody discovers an equation that would help them solve the
problem, they still must make sure that it makes sense.
They would do that by finding out if
somebody has used it the same way they have or just verifying through somebody if it is right.
Depending on what the data gathering contains within the documents for example a formula or
graphs, the way that I would the validity of those examples is that I would go through the
references that they provided.
Basically, double-check and go over the reference that mentions
that example to ensure that they are correct. As stated in the learning material “Content or face
validity simply refers to whether the instrument measures the items it was intended to
measure. In other words, does the instrument seem appropriate for the stated purpose and
data desired to be collected?” (Learning Material, n.d.). For the reliability of the data gathered
on the earlier mentioned, I would ensure that the topic that is the reference is utilizing the same
topic or something similar to what I am researching. The reference that they reference have
been consistent in utilizing the same material toward the topic that not only I’m researching but
they are as well.
