Observation and Assessment in Early Childhood Education
Lorrine Boyd
November, 20, 2023
Dear Parents and Families,
Hello my name is Nida Zohra, I hope everyone is doing great and keeping safe. I am
communicating to let you know about the assessment and observation and how much we
emphasize. This letter is to introduce you to observation and assessment and how it works in
our program.
I want to share this information with you so you can get familiarize with it, and understand why
we use it in our program and how it helps us understand our children better. I want to ask the
parents on what do you think or understand by observation and assessment? I will be explaining
why and how it’s being used in our program and you will also be included in the process at all
times. Observation and assessment are needed to be establish on what children know and can
do, and to identify their needs so we can prove and interact and be able to match their needs. I
will be observing and assessing your child on a weekly basis and writing my observation to
compare. I will be adding my observation in our teaching strategies program. In this program I
will be able to assign objectives/dimensions to see how your child is growing.
I will be observing/assessing the PILES (Physical, Intellectual, Language and Literacy, Emotional
and Social) domains.
The observation in the assessment plan follows PILES, by observing a child
you will see their physical, intellectual, cognitive, language, emotional, and social development.
This helps identify the child developing in the areas and meeting perspective developmental
milestones for their age. Activities that boost emotional intelligence are puppets and feelings or
plastic egg faces. Cognitive activities are mental tasks that require attention, focus, and
concertation. Some activities related to this would be drawing, and language activities that help
every day by just having an active conversation and reading books, playing rhyming games and
dramatic play where the children take on imaginary roles. Your child will be observed/assessed
everyday while they do their everyday activities. Example, when we go play in centers and your
child picks up a block and starts using its imaginations as to call a block a cellphone or camera.
The observations/assessments will take place in the classroom or on the playground on our
daily activates/routines. Observations/assessments are the children doing things on their own.
Not teacher directed. Observations/assessments results will be discussed at our parent teacher
conference or when needed an immediately concern. Observation/assessment will be going
hand in hand NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). Let me tell you
a little about NAEYC. NAEYC developed a code to help guide the thinking of professionals in the
field of Early Childhood Education. The Code outlines both ideals and principles for
professionals working with children, families, colleagues and the community. My observations/
assessments will be aligned with NAEYC Code. When I do my observation/assessments their will
all go aligned with PILES Domains and with Virginia Early Learning Standards (ELDS).Virginia
Early Learning Standards reflect the knowledge and skills that a child on developmental
progression should know and be able to do at the end of an age-related timeframe. PILES gives
me the domains I need to see you child is able to do and FELS give us an age timeframe for
them to be able to complete or just be able to do. I just want you child to be developmental at
where their need to be.
Thank you for taking time to read this letter. I hope it was easy to understand why and how I will
be observing/assessing your child and how the information will get to you. I will be working to
have you child where they need to be by using NEYC and ELDS.
