WRITING ASSIGNMENT 5 1 Challenges And Opportunities The Security Profession Will Face Jorden Benjamin SCC 3311: Introduction to Security Professor Felix Mangual December 2, 2022 Ever since the tragic event of 9/11, the security industry has rapidly become more visible in American society and the business world. Today’s criminal justice system struggles to effectively reduce crime. Law enforcement agencies seem to focus more on violent crimes over economic or cybercrimes. The problem of crime has therefore grown and has only become more sophisticated thanks to advancing technologies, leaving companies and consumers with a growing need for security. These factors have contributed to the recent growth of the private security industry. I believe evolving crime trends will bring opportunities for the security profession while new technology will significantly improve the effectiveness of the security industry. I also believe that the increasing demand for cybersecurity might leave many companies in want of highly qualified security professionals. As security organizations expand both locally and internationally while adapting to developments in crime trends, many companies will seek to recruit qualified cybersecurity professionals. Statistics show, however, that 60% of companies are concerned about cybersecurity risks due to worker/skill shortages. (ISC2, 2022) Despite the ever-growing demand for cybersecurity professionals, many experienced cybersecurity specialists will find it challenging to find employment opportunities unless they are well versed in all aspects of cybersecurity. Funding for effective cybersecurity is expensive, yet essential, therefore
WRITING ASSIGNMENT 5 2 companies want quality security for as cheaply as feasibly possible. Rather than hiring a department of individuals who specialize in one area of cybersecurity, they might prefer hiring a small team of more experienced all-in-one cybersecurity professionals for even entry level positions. To combat evolving cyber threats, statistics show that companies increased spending on information security and risk management by 12.2% in 2022 and budgets are expected to undergo an annual growth rate of 11% by 2026. (Nayyar, 2022) Rather than using the budget for recruitment, investments would likely be made towards more and more advanced security tools which would overwhelm small teams of security workers and lessen the effectiveness of security overall. Although it would be more expensive, if the growing budget would go towards training less experienced employees or hiring more specialized cybersecurity workers, opportunities within the cybersecurity profession would increase. Societies evolving trends will contribute to the growing importance of the private security sector. Violent crimes such as terrorism and active shooters are threats that are unpredictable and law enforcement agencies can only react to these events. Security agencies will be sought to both develop plans for and prepare for these events. Both the pre-employment and random drug test industry, as well as employee background checks have become commonplace in today’s workplaces. Employee theft, supply chain security, and brand protection from counterfeits are other common trends that require the use of private security companies over law enforcement agencies to effectively prevent and reduce losses. Recent events have even brought the need of security services such as pandemic planning and constant situation analysis of international issues. In my opinion, advancing technology presents both challenges towards the security profession and opportunities to improve the security industry. There are concerns for the
WRITING ASSIGNMENT 5 3 potential risks of emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and cloud computing among others. However, technology has significantly improved the security industry over the last few decades with the introduction of CCTV, biometrics, cloud software, and even drone technology. New and arriving technology such as robotic security officers will improve the capacity and effectiveness of security if used in conjunction with humans, while improved high resolution cameras with better motion and sound detection can be utilized to overcome limitations in current models. The most significant change, however, will most likely come with predictive analytics and machine learning. AI will not be the complete solution for all cybersecurity concerns, but it can be helpful for automatic, hands-off decision making and threat detection. “These algorithms work by first learning from real-world data, such as existing security threats and false positives, as well as the newest threats found by researchers worldwide.” (Kangas, 2022) Technology will continue to advance, bringing both potential security risks, but also many significant improvements to the security industry.
