Footprinting Analysis
2
When examining an organization for potential vulnerabilities and weaknesses in their
security processes one task you will most likely see is penetration testing. Within the task of
penetration testing, we find that the first step is Footprinting.
Footprinting plays a crucial role in
the ethical hacking process and is a fundamental step in penetration testing. It involves
gathering information about a target system or network to identify vulnerabilities and potential
entry points for an attacker.
The importance of Footprinting lies in its ability to provide ethical hackers with valuable
insights into the target's infrastructure, systems, and potential weaknesses. By thoroughly
understanding the target's digital footprint, an ethical hacker can assess security risks, plan
attacks, and devise effective penetration testing strategies.
During penetration testing, the information gathered through Footprinting helps ethical
hackers identify vulnerabilities, potential attack vectors, and weaknesses in the target's security
posture. By understanding the target's network topology, system configurations, and software
versions, ethical hackers can simulate real-world attacks, assess the effectiveness of existing
security measures, and recommend improvements to enhance the target's security defenses.
Digging into our target, Lockheed Martin, we find that the main companies were
founded in 1912. The main headquarters is based out of Bethesda, Maryland. This corporation
employs about 115,000 employees around the world. Lockheed Martin’s main website is
htts://www.lockheedmartin.com. The website is hosted by Amazon, which is in the US.
Lockheed Martins domain is listed as lockheedmartin.com. The located server is identified as
ns1.lmco.com. The main IPv4 address is 13.224.68.129 and has a large range of both IPv4 and
IPv6 addresses.

From a security standpoint Lockheedmartin.com has the latest versions of security for
their website. They have employed TLS version 1.3 and RSA encryption at a length of 2048. The
website has two identified web trackers that both belong to Google. Overall, I believe that
Lockheed Martin has a well built and secure network.
In summary, Footprinting is vital in the ethical hacking process as it enables hackers to
gather crucial information about the target, identify vulnerabilities, and plan penetration testing
activities. It serves as a foundation for effective and targeted security assessments, leading to
improved defense mechanisms and strengthened cybersecurity.
