Justification Articles Source: Ahrens, Marty. Home fires involving cooking equipment . Quincy: National Fire Protection Association, 2009. Summary: Ranges or ovens cause a majority of fires in the 21st century within homes. Past the 21st century, however, cooking has long since been the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. From 2003-2006, U.S fire departments responded to an average of over 150,000 home fires associated with cooking or cooking equipment. Such fires cause hundreds of deaths and hundreds of millions in property damages. The writers of this article went on to use this statistic as a basis for conducting a study on home fires in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, a lot of these fires are preventable, and the article firmly claims that civilians ought to be prepared for a fire before it happens. It also delves into the age groups that are more at risk than others, such as children under five years old being at a much higher risk of death from home fires involving cooking equipment. Critique: The study goes above and beyond to provide statistics about the fires that occur within homes and even goes as far as analyzing the presence of smoke alarm activity within the homes that have experienced fires involving cooking equipment. However, I would appreciate more information on ways to attack the problem and solve it. Although it claims that these fires can be preventable, it does not go to the same lengths to provide information for users as it does provide statistics.
