Module 3 Discussion
Cloud Technology for Data Management
Many companies today have been turning more and more to the cloud for their data storage needs. As with any technology there are the good and the bad issues that can be found. Given the major strides in the advancement of the technologies cloud storage will most primary method of data storage as it continues to grow. We can quickly see that some of the benefits that can be found from this method of data management can include; reduced overhead costs, quick accessibility as well as global scalability. These things as well can include the belief of unlimited storage capacity which includes the means to automate data backups. We are also finding that you can now automate and quickly restore any files and lost data. Companies are seeing that they have less management
problems which includes being able to just pay a monthly bill while providing incredible mobility options for their employees. All of these features can make data management with cloud storage very appealing. This not only is for the smaller companies but the larger companies are now going all in too. Many companies are at the same time finding out the incredible security risks as well. As we have seen
with the recent data breaches. You are only as safe as your data which the cloud also opens options for being hacked or compromised. While the cloud storage industry took a major boom in services with COVID, with files being easily stored and backed up. We are now seeing how vulnerable this data can become once
someone from the outside gets access. There is a big chance for loss of that data. Denial of
service attacks, (DOS) can prevent you from even having access to that data. There also are risks
of viruses, hackers at large or just plain mistakenly deleting of critical data.
Overall, I think that the benefits are outweighing the risks. As well the technology in data
security has come a long way to help mitigate many of these risks. I know for one Microsoft, CISCO as well as Google have all stepped up their game when it comes to data privacy and security for company’s data. The addition of two factor authentication as well as rotating user passwords, multi-layer encryption all help resolve many of the risks. While we will never have a
totally secure cloud system, I have come to feel that we have made huge strides to allow for cloud storage to keep moving forward.
