to identify sustainability improvements that a company could make. For each source, explain
how this source can be used to develop the sustainability policy.
External Information Sources:
These sources include professional associations, faith-based
institutions and supply-chain partners
Internal Information sources:
These include supervisors, company meetings and the
company sustainability report.
2.
Outline the purpose and scope of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation
Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Give an example of how a business would have to modify its business
practices to conform to this legislation.

EPBC Act protect the environment, especially matters of national environmental significance,
conserve Australian biodiversity. The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation
Act covers environmental assessment and approvals, protects significant integrates the
management of important natural and cultural places
3.
Outline the purpose and scope of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme.
Give an example of how a business would have to modify its business practices to conform to
these regulations.
The purpose of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme is to provide
data and accounting concerning greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption and
production. It is a national framework for corporations to report greenhouse gas (GHG)
emissions, energy consumption and energy production from 1 July 2008 established under
the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (the Act).
The Scheme
’
s legislated objectives are to:
Inform policy-making and the Australian public

4.
Describe how complying with the Australian Packaging Covenant voluntary code of practice
could affect the way a company does business.
Optimising resource recovery of Consumer Packaging through the supply chain
By alternating the way we design, use and buy packaging and packaged products will result
in the use of
fewer resources and more recycling. Therefore, this will enhance the economy
by minimising waste
associated with the generation and use of Consumer Packaging across
the supply chain.
Preventing the impacts of fugitive packaging on the environment
By adopting approaches that support innovations and find solutions to capture packaging
materials or
waste before it enters the environment, or support the adoption of new or
alternative types of packaging.
5.
Describe how complying with the Australian Ecolabel Program voluntary code of practice
could affect the way a company does business.
Encouraging Economic Efficiency
Eco-labeling is beneficial to both government and industry. It is generally cheaper than
regulatory controls. By empowering customers and manufacturers to make environmentally
supportive decisions, they keep the need for regulation to a minimum.
Encouraging Market Development
When customers choose eco-labelled products, they have a direct impact on supply and
demand in the marketplace.
Updating Consumer Choice
Eco-labeling empowers people to discriminate between products that are harmful to the
environment and those more compatible with environmental objectives. An eco-label makes
the
customer more aware of the benefits of certain products, for example, recycled paper or
toxic-free
cleaning agents. It also promotes energy efficiency, waste minimization and
product stewardship.
Encouraging Improvement
A dynamic market for eco-labelled products reinforces a corporate commitment to
continuous
environmental improvement. Customers can expect to see the environmental
impacts of products
decline over time.
6.
List at least four environmental and resource sustainability measurements that a company
could use to establish sustainability benchmarks.
•
Set clear sustainability standards for suppliers.
•
Involving the board in sustainability operations.
•
Enterprises will obtain at least 30% of their energy from renewable sources in the next three
years.
•
Board discussions on operational strategy, risk assessment and revenue allocation
7.
Describe three purchasing approaches that can contribute to sustainable work practices.

Reduce business travel:
Your sustainability efforts can extend outside of the office space and have an even broader
impact thanks
to modern technology. However, most of the travel can be avoided in
today’s
era owing to advanced
technology such as online meeting through skype or working from
home. Thus, it will reduce the voyage
which will lower the carbon footprint.
Invest in a Digital Filing System:
Switching to the digital filing systems such as cloud-based options. This will reduce the need
for paper
documentation. Moreover, online data can be accessed from multiple devices and
from anywhere in the
world.
Energy Efficient:
Even small steps, such as installing energy-efficient light bulbs, can help lower the carbon
footprint and
utility bills. Before making the switch on a grand scale, test some different
options in different places in
the office. While sustainability has to be a priority, it cannot
delay productivity or indeed, safety in more
manual environments. Motion sensor lighting
solutions are also gaining in popularity
–
as soon as people
leave an area the lights will turn
themselves off automatically.
8.
Give an example of a supply chain consideration that can contribute to sustainable work
practices.
A supply chain can make a significant impact in promoting human rights, fair labour
practices,
environmental progress and anti-corruption policies. Doing so will improve
understanding within an
organization of how decisions made, beyond procurement, can
affect the supply chain. An
organization's supply chain connects inputs to outputs, outlining
the process of producing and
delivering consumer goods. Focusing on the supply chain is
one aspect of achieving business
sustainability as it covers a variety of areas for
improvement.
9.
Describe how a business can use sustainability indicators to measure quality assurance.
•
Sustainability indicators are used in business to inform public policy-making as part of the
process of
sustainability governance
. They can provide information on any aspect of the
interplay
between the environment and socio-economic activities. Building strategic
indicator sets
generally deal with just a few simple questions:
•
What is happening? (Descriptive indicators)
•
Does it matter and are we reaching targets? (Performance indicators)
Are we improving?
(Efficiency indicators)
•
Are measures working? (Policy effectiveness indicators)
Are we generally better off? (Total welfare
indicators).

Activities
Complete the following activities.
Carefully read the following scenario.
You are the Administration Manager of a health resort and convention centre in the
Blue Mountains, near Sydney. The resort, Blue Healer, is made up of five areas:
catering, spa, meeting rooms accommodation, and administration. Each area has
its own full-time manager.
The kitchen is large enough to feed over 100 people three meals each day. There
are two full-time kitchen staff, and the rest of the staff are hired on a casual basis to
cater for functions and retreats.
There is accommodation for 80 people in twin and double rooms. Surrounding
hotels provide further accommodation when needed.
The spa has two saunas, a steam room, three warm water spas, four massage
rooms and two consultation rooms where naturopathic consultations and facial
treatments are performed. The spa runs continuously, mostly due to locals visiting,
whether a course is running or not.
There is also an office where the accounts are done, and records kept. It is an open
plan office with 5 staff workstations. Most staff prefer to work with their own laptops,
connected to the larger computer screens.
Much of Blue
Healer’s
administrative work is carried out in the office, but several
staff work from home several days each week.
There are four meeting rooms of various sizes, and these can be opened up to
make one large room for functions such as weddings and courses. There is also a
reception and administration area where computers and printers can be accessed.
As Administration Manager, you are responsible for the office area as well as the
meeting rooms.
Blue Healer has recently adopted a Sustainability Policy and Procedures and each
area manager has been requested to determine how these will impact their work
team’s
activities.
The CEO has indicated that Blue Healer does not want to incur any additional costs
in implementing the Sustainability Policy and Procedures. If any additional
resources are necessary, management expects that an itemised budget will be
submitted to them before resources are approved and allocated.
Currently the organisation has the following issues and practices:
•
There is older style florescent lighting throughout the building. These lights are
often left on after the workday has finished, and the cleaners turn them off
when they have finished with their work.

•
There are no formal energy usage procedures for staff or signage to remind
staff about these.
•
The company does not have a policy for purchasing equipment and buys
equipment when required; often purchasing whatever is on special at the time.
•
There are two company vehicles. Both vehicles are now five years old and
need to be upgraded.
•
Staff buy stationary requirements on an ad hoc basis, often resulting in large
stocks of items such as notepads and A grade printer paper.
•
Kitchen waste is often thrown in the general refuse bin
•
There is a waste bin and recycling bins, which are often used incorrectly.
•
The office is cleaned once a week by contract cleaners who use regular
cleaning products.
1.
Develop a Sustainability Improvement Report.
Review the following websites and take notes on sustainability targets that would
be appropriate for the case study organisation.
https://www.business.gov.au/risk-management/environmental-
impact/environmental-management/environmental-legislation-licences-and-permits
http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/services-and-advice/business/energy-and-
materials-efficiency-for-business/resources-and-tools/life-cycle-management
Conduct further research using the Internet or any other source of information to
identify the
company’s
sustainability obligations and how these can be met.
Using your research and analysis, develop a report on your area of Blue Healer to
present at a senior management meeting. Your report should include the following:
•
An introduction: state the purpose of the report and summarise the current
organisational sustainability practices.
•
Identify the environmental regulations that apply to the organisation
•
Describe, and analyse, procedures that would assess Blue
Healer’s
compliance with the environmental/ sustainability regulations
•
Explain at least five environmental and resource efficiency systems and
procedures that could be relevant for the Blue Healer.
•
Describe at least three benchmarks for environmental and resource
sustainability that could be relevant to the organisation
•
Outline at least three common environmental and energy efficiency issues
within the industry in which Blue Healer operates

•
Review the case study information and document the current resource usage
of your team members.
•
Document your
team’s
work processes as set out in the case study information
and identify at least three ways of reducing their environmental impact.
•
Document the
company’s
current purchasing strategies as set out in the case
study information. Analyse these and determine at least one way that each
could be improved.
•
Evaluate the
company’s
costing strategies and determine whether these can
be changed to ensure that the company take sustainability into consideration.
•
Discuss possible strategies for ensuring that resource efficiency continues to
occur.
•
Set efficiency targets for your team
While conducting the research, be mindful that many organisations require external
assistance in determining the best ways to improve their sustainability. Find, and
document, at least two environmental specialists that could perform this task for
Blue Healer. They should operate in the same state or territory as your RTO.
Include their name, website address and a summary of the services they offer.
Develop an action plan to show at least six actions that will be completed by your
team over the upcoming 12 months.
The action plan should show the priorities of actions as well as timelines and
responsibilities.
Use the Sustainability Improvement Report Template to guide your work.

For example, converting to energy-efficient faucets, toilets and lighting can be a great
way to
save water, energy and budget dollars.
•
Chemical Management:
We are learning more and more about the impact of chemicals on our environment.
I strive to use green cleaning products and non-chemical products for pest control
and weed
management. Use chemical vendors to help train employees on the proper
use and disposal of
chemicals.
•
Purchase Only Energy Efficient Products:
Look for energy-efficient electronic products and use environmentally friendly settings on
office
equipment’s.
Choose computer, electronic and IT acquisition products that are
EPEAT
registered
to ensure the highest levels of efficiency.
Environmental regulations:
•
The Clean Air
Act:
The Clean
Water Act:
•
This Act was passed in 1977 and is imposed by the EPA, with assistance in specific matters
from
state agencies or entities. The Act makes it unlawful for any person to discharge any
pollutant
from a source point into navigable waters of the United States unless they have
obtained a
special license allowing such activity from the EPA. Ten years after its
performing, the Clean
Water Act was amended to include provisions which focused on
toxic pollutants, authorized
citizen suits and funded sewage treatment plants.
•
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA):
•
NEPA is oldest federal environmental protection laws, has been passed in 1969. The
aim
of
NEPA
is to ensure that the government researches and gives proper consideration to
potential
environmental effects before undertaking any major federal action, like the
construction of a
new highway. As part of this consideration, the government must complete
Environmental
Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) for any action
they contemplate.
•
The Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA):
In 1970, concerned with the increasing lack of worker and workplace safety, Congress passed
OSHA
.
The main thrust of OSHA is to require employers to provide their workers with a safe
workplace.
While some OSHA requirements do not directly affect the environment (such as the
requirements
concerning safety for workers on elevated sites), other provisions specifically address
environmental
issues.
•
The Pollution Prevention Act:
This Act is passed in 1990, includes provisions aimed at reducing the amount of pollution in the
environment by making changes in production, operation, and use of raw materials by both private
industry and the government. Also this Act is particularly focused on source decrease of pollution
rather than reactively focusing upon how to deal with pollution once it has entered the
environment. An area of the Pollution Prevention Act, which has had a dramatic and recognizable
impact on the general public is the push towards recycling and reuse of materials.
Regulation compliance:
●
Participate environmental, health and safety objectives and targets into our business strategies and
plans. Fulfill with environmental, health and safety laws, regulations, standards and ordinances in
each of the countries in which we do business.
●
Train employees with respect to environmental, health and safety performance and provide training
to assist employees in performing their responsibilities.

●
Foster environmental, health and safety ethics among management by setting
management
performance targets into our business strategies.
●
Act responsibly and communicate openly with our customers, neighbours, employees, government
officials and other stakeholders relative to the safety profile of our products and operations.
Efficiency systems and procedures:
●
Waste assessments can help you recognize and mange waste responsibly and efficiently.
●
Enhanced purchasing practices can reduce the resources you use.
●
Improved storage can make your site safer. It can minimize risks to health and the environment.
●
Maintaining energy and water can help to decrease your costs and minimize emissions.
Benchmarks:
●
Enterprises will take at least 30% of their energy from renewable sources in the next three years
and 100% in the following ten years.
●
Sustainability considerations are joined into the board discussions on operational strategy, risk
assessment & mitigation, and revenue allocation.
●
Direct board involvement need in sustainability operations of the company.
●
Make clear sustainability standards for suppliers.
Energy efficiency issues:
●
Production of too much waste
●
Lack of cooperation from employees
●
Use of non-reusable materials
Current usage:
Usual resources that we use at work consist of things such as energy and water. Energy comes in
many
forms. The most obvious form is electricity, which we use in the workplace to power up our
appliances,
and our computers. Gas is also a form of energy that we may use in our workplace for
heating. There is
also fuel that workplaces use for their vehicles.
Water is used in many work environments, usually in the toilets and bathrooms, and also for drinking.
Paper is also one of the typical resource that used in the workplace. Paper comes from trees, so it comes
from a natural resource. Don't forget also that the building we actually work in, is made up of a variety of
things such as bricks, metal and glass. Most of these products have obviously at some stage
been
extracted from the ground, so there has been an environmental influence at that point.
Areas for improvement:
●
Watch your water usage
: You can easily get a reading from your water meter, and confirm that
when no-one is on site (e.g. over the weekend), no water is being leaked anywhere. Using
automatic
taps, harvesting rain water, water-saving shower heads and low water-usage toilets
can also further
reduce your water usage.
●
Recycle:
if you
can’t
go paperless. Most workplaces still mix through paper,
it’s
no secret. Mixing
through what was formerly an oxygen-producing entity is not great for the forest, the continent
the
forest is on, or humanity. Using recycled paper is a good start. Depending on your business,
there are
many exciting ways you can increase your use of recycled goods. For example,
insulation based on old
newspaper or roads made with old printer toners.
●
Alternatives of power-plant:
Like LED light-bulbs, motion-sensing to control that lighting, LED
computer monitors etc. Prioritize buying or replacing equipment and appliances with their higher
Energy
Rating alternatives.

Purchasing strategies:
•
Supplier Optimization:
The Company chooses a best mix of vendors who can provide
the best
prices and terms. This procedure usually means that the less able suppliers who
cannot provide
a quality service at the terms and prices required are rejected.
•
Qualify Methods:
Total Quality Methods, require the vendors to provide an ever
increasing
quality service with zero errors. The supplier ensures
purchasing best practices
using a number
of tools such as six sigma.
•
Green Purchasing:
This is a common purchasing policies for governments and local
governments. This policy champions the need for recycling and purchasing products that
have a
negative influence on the environment.
Continuous improvement:
●
Lean & Continuously Improving:
It is
designed to help eliminate
waste throughout a
company.
Waste is anything that doesn't add value for the customer. This constant process
improvement
strategy works to eliminate problems rather than directly improve a
process. The results are
similar, but by taking a waste-focused approach, it is often
easier to come up with goals from
which improvement strategies can be developed.
●
Value Stream Mapping: This
is one of the most important continuous improvement
strategies
because it can be used within almost all others. This process looks at the
design and flow of
processes within a company to see where value is being added. A
value stream map can also be
a great brainstorming tool for areas that could be improved.
Targets:
1.
Set and track attainable goals:
Outline key goals and take into consideration your
team’s
capacity to execute on them. Make sure
you
have
processes
in
place,
and
consider HR
workflow
software,
to
track
your
progress.
In the meantime,
don’t
forget to keep the goals achievable. Assigning one large
project even with a
reasonable deadline could be overwhelming. Otherwise, breaking large
projects into smaller iterations
shows clear progress and motivates colleagues as they move
toward the final product.
2.
Clarify roles and tasks:
The next step is meeting with your team members one-on-one to communicate the priorities and
expectations for their roles. First of all, describe the top two or three high priority tasks you want them
to focus on. Then estimate the time your employees should devote to these tasks. At the same time,
help them understand the quality of the work you are expecting. Then make sure to explain the result
you are trying to achieve. And finally, get out of their way
—
give your employees the freedom to work
in the best manner possible.
3.
Give and receive feedback:
Develop a culture of trust in your team, providing constructive, meaningful feedback on a regular
basis. For example, ask about the challenges your employees face, how you can help them slice
their
time more successfully, and whether they need more resources.
4.
Enhance productivity by communicating effectively:
One of the keys to working more efficiently is to get a single communication system. This idea is
supported by the fact that almost half of US workers prefer to communicate with colleagues online,
saving on productivity.
The perfect communication system for your company is a team messenger. Every team can find the
best solution depending on its
needs. It will be
the universe of your team where you
won’t
get
distracted by chatting with relatives or friends.

Sustainability improvement report
Introduction
Sustainability report helps organizations set goals, and manage change more effectively.
Organizational Sustainability Practices:
•
Partner with Employees:
Spend the time in
training employees
on the importance of sustaining the environment and
share what the organization is doing to help conserve resources.
•
Water and Electric Conservation:
Preserving our water is something we can all join in by reducing the prospects for wasting this
valued resource.
For example, converting to energy-efficient faucets, toilets and lighting can be a great way to
save water, energy and budget dollars.
•
Chemical Management:
We are learning more and more about the impact of chemicals on our environment.
I strive to use green cleaning products and non-chemical products for pest control and
weed
management. Use chemical vendors to help train employees on the proper use
and disposal of
chemicals.

Water Act was amended to include provisions which focused on toxic
pollutants, authorized
citizen suits and funded sewage treatment plants.
•
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA):
•
NEPA is oldest federal environmental protection laws, has been passed in 1969. The aim
of
NEPA
is to ensure that the government researches and gives proper consideration to potential
environmental effects before undertaking any major federal action, like the construction of a
new highway. As part of this consideration, the government must complete Environmental
Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs) for any action they contemplate.
•
The Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA):
In 1970, concerned with the increasing lack of worker and workplace safety, Congress passed
OSHA
.
The main thrust of OSHA is to require employers to provide their workers with a safe workplace.
While some OSHA requirements do not directly affect the environment (such as the requirements
concerning safety for workers on elevated sites), other provisions specifically address environmental
issues.
•
The Pollution Prevention Act:
This Act is passed in 1990, includes provisions aimed at reducing the amount of pollution in the
environment by making changes in production, operation, and use of raw materials by both private
industry and the government. Also this Act is particularly focused on source decrease of pollution,
rather than reactively focusing upon how to deal with pollution once it has entered the
environment.
●
Train employees with respect to environmental, health and safety performance and provide
training
to assist employees in performing their responsibilities.
●
Foster environmental, health and safety ethics among management by setting
management
performance targets into our business strategies.
●
Act responsibly and communicate openly with our customers, neighbours, employees,
government
officials and other stakeholders relative to the safety profile of our products and
operations.

Benchmarks:
●
Enterprises will take at least 30% of their energy from renewable sources in the next three
years
and 100% in the following ten years.
●
Sustainability considerations are joined into the board discussions on operational strategy,
risk
assessment & mitigation, and revenue allocation.
●
Direct board involvement need in sustainability operations of the company.
●
Make clear sustainability standards for suppliers.
Energy efficiency issues:
●
Production of too much waste
●
Lack of cooperation from employees
●
Use of non-reusable materials
Current usage:
Usual resources that we use at work consist of things such as energy and water. Energy comes in
many
forms. The most obvious form is electricity, which we use in the workplace to power up our
appliances,
and our computers. Gas is also a form of energy that we may use in our workplace for
heating. There is
also fuel that workplaces use for their vehicles.
Water is used in many work environments, usually in the toilets and bathrooms, and also for
drinking.
Paper is also one of the typical resource that used in the workplace. Paper comes from
trees, so it comes
from a natural resource. Don't forget also that the building we actually work in, is
made up of a variety of
things such as bricks, metal and glass. Most of these products have
obviously at some stage been
extracted from the ground, so there has been an environmental
influence at that point.
Areas for improvement:
●
Watch your water usage
: You can easily get a reading from your water meter, and confirm that
when no-one is on site (e.g. over the weekend), no water is being leaked anywhere. Using
automatic
taps, harvesting rain water, water-saving shower heads and low water-usage toilets
can also further
reduce your water usage.
●
Recycle:
if you
can’t
go paperless. Most workplaces still mix through paper,
it’s
no secret. Mixing
through what was formerly an oxygen-producing entity is not great for the forest, the continent the
forest is on, or humanity. Using recycled paper is a good start. Depending on your business, there
are
many exciting ways you can increase your use of recycled goods. For example, insulation
based on old
newspaper or roads made with old printer toners.
●
Alternatives of power-plant:
Like LED light-bulbs, motion-sensing to control that lighting, LED
computer monitors etc. Prioritize buying or replacing equipment and appliances with their higher
Energy
Rating alternatives.
Purchasing strategies:
•
Supplier Optimization:
The Company chooses a best mix of vendors who can provide the
best
prices and terms. This procedure usually means that the less able suppliers who cannot
provide
a quality service at the terms and prices required are rejected.
•
Qualify Methods:
Total Quality Methods, require the vendors to provide an ever
increasing
quality service with zero errors. The supplier ensures
purchasing best practices

using a number
of tools such as six sigma.

governments. This policy champions the need for recycling and purchasing products that
have a
negative influence on the environment.

Deliver a sustainability training session for your team.
At the outset of the presentation, indicate that the team will be able to ask questions
during and at the end of the presentation and may offer suggestions for additional
strategies.
Clearly deliver your presentation content using the slides you have developed.
When you have summarised the Sustainability Policy and Procedures and your
Sustainability Improvement Report, discuss your findings from your inspection.
Ask the meeting attendees for their suggestions for improving their environmental
and resource efficiency management.
Encourage them to identify more energy efficient ways of doing their jobs, and
evaluate these strategies in the group.
When you ask the meeting participants about their own resource usage practices,
keep in mind that they are actually colleagues roleplaying members of your team,
not Blue Healer employees. So, when you question them, make it clear that you are
also asking for an honest reply to your questions as it applies to them in real life. As
well as taking note of their responses, open up discussion about why they use
resources in the way they do and whether they have considered changing this.
Your team members should understand their own role in achieving sustainability
improvements.
Take notes on these discussions to assist you in the next activity.
As well as present the information, you are required, in the role of Administration
Manager, to solve problems that arise during the meeting, so pay attention to the
issues raised by the group and try to find solutions to each.
During and after the presentation, demonstrate effective communication skills
including:
•
Speaking clearly and concisely
•

Sustainability improvement report
Introduction
Sustainability report helps organizations set goals, and manage change more effectively.
Organizational Sustainability Practices:
•
Partner with Employees:
Spend the time in
training employees
on the importance of sustaining the
environment and
share what the organization is doing to help conserve resources.
•
Water and Electric Conservation:
Preserving our water is something we can all join in by reducing the prospects for
wasting this
valued resource.

Also this Act is particularly focused on source decrease of pollution,
rather than reactively focusing upon how to deal with pollution once it has entered the
environment.
It can minimize risks to health and the
environment.
●
Maintaining energy and water can help to decrease your costs and minimize emissions.
Benchmarks:

Most workplaces still mix through paper,
it’s
no secret. Mixing
through what was formerly an oxygen-producing entity is not great for the forest, the continent
the
forest is on, or humanity. Using recycled paper is a good start. Depending on your business,
there are
many exciting ways you can increase your use of recycled goods. For example,
insulation based on old
newspaper or roads made with old printer toners.
●
Alternatives of power-plant:
Like LED light-bulbs, motion-sensing to control that lighting, LED
computer monitors etc. Prioritize buying or replacing equipment and appliances with their higher
Energy
Rating alternatives.
Purchasing strategies:
•
Supplier Optimization:
The Company chooses a best mix of vendors who can provide the
best
prices and terms. This procedure usually means that the less able suppliers who cannot
provide
a quality service at the terms and prices required are rejected.
•
Qualify Methods:
Total Quality Methods, require the vendors to provide an ever increasing
quality service with zero errors. The supplier ensures
purchasing best practices
using a
number
of tools such as six sigma.
•
Green Purchasing:
This is a common purchasing policies for governments and local
governments. This policy champions the need for recycling and purchasing products that have a
negative influence on the environment.
Continuous improvement:
●
Lean & Continuously Improving:
It is
designed to help eliminate
waste throughout a
company.
Waste is anything that doesn't add value for the customer. This constant process

improvement
strategy works to eliminate problems rather than directly improve a process.
The results are
similar, but by taking a waste-focused approach, it is often easier to come up
with goals from
which improvement strategies can be developed.
●
Value Stream Mapping: This
is one of the most important continuous improvement strategies
because it can be used within almost all others. This process looks at the design and flow
of
processes within a company to see where value is being added. A value stream map can
also be
a great brainstorming tool for areas that could be improved.
Targets:
1.
Set and track attainable goals:
Outline key goals and take into consideration your
team’s
capacity to execute on them. Make sure you
have
processes
in
place,
and
consider HR
workflow
software,
to
track
your
progress.
In the meantime,
don’t
forget to keep the goals achievable. Assigning one large project
even with a
reasonable deadline could be overwhelming. Otherwise, breaking large projects into
smaller iterations
shows clear progress and motivates colleagues as they move toward the final
product.

Activities
Complete the following activities.
Carefully read the following scenario.
Assume that the Sustainability Improvement Report you developed has been
implemented, as well as findings from sustainability inspections and reports in other
areas of the resort. Sustainability initiatives that have been implemented include:
•
Energy audit and all recommendations implemented including signage about
energy use (e.g. switch off lights at night, turn down brightness, turn off taps)
•
Recycling policy introduced, and three more recycling bins introduced.
•
Green purchasing policy developed (on staff intranet, email sent to staff to
advise).
•
Green transport policy developed and implemented (on staff intranet, email
sent to staff to advise).
Assume also the following sustainability targets:
•
Reduce electricity consumption by 20% within six months.
•
Promote awareness of sustainability initiatives amongst all staff members
A staff survey (results provided in Survey Results), as well as an energy audit have
been undertaken.
The results of the energy audit are as follows:
Actions implemented:
•
Replaced halogen downlights with energy efficient downlights and
transformers.

can’t
cut
their usage. However, you can reduce the amount of energy they use by using energy-efficient bulbs.
