Two Future Trends of Information Systems Infrastructure Two future trends in information systems infrastructure that are expected to significantly impact businesses and their competitive advantage is the adoption of cloud computing and the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI). According to Gill, Tuli, Xu, Singh, Singh, Lindsay, and Garraghan (2019), cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services, such as storage, servers, databases, and software, over the internet. Instead of businesses having to maintain their own physical servers and infrastructure, they can now access these resources on- demand through cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. One of the key advantages of cloud computing is its scalability. Businesses can easily scale their IT infrastructure up or down based on their needs, without having to make large upfront investments. This allows companies to rapidly adapt to changes in their business environment and gain a competitive edge ( Gill et al., 2019). For example, during peak periods, retailers can quickly scale their e-commerce systems to handle increased traffic and transactions, ensuring a seamless customer experience. A study by IDC estimates that the worldwide public cloud services market will reach $500 billion by 2023, indicating the increasing adoption of cloud computing by businesses. Additionally, a survey by LogicMonitor found that 83% of enterprise workloads will be in the cloud by 2020. These statistics suggest that businesses recognize the potential benefits of cloud computing and are leveraging it to gain a competitive advantage. Another future trend in information systems infrastructure is the growing use of AI. AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as pattern recognition, natural language processing, and problem-
solving. Businesses are increasingly utilizing AI technologies to gain insights from large volumes of data, automate tasks, and enhance decision-making processes. AI-powered systems can help businesses gain a competitive advantage by enabling them to make more accurate predictions and optimize operations. For example, retailers can leverage AI to analyze customer data, identify trends, and personalize recommendations, resulting in a better customer experience and increased sales ( Qureshi, Jeon, & Piccialli, 2021). Also, companies can use AI algorithms to optimize supply chain operations, reducing costs and improving efficiency. A report by McKinsey Global Institute suggests that AI could contribute to an additional global economic output of $13 trillion by 2030. This indicates the potential impact of AI on businesses and their competitive advantage. Moreover, a survey conducted by Gartner found that AI implementation grew by 270% in the past four years, indicating the increasing adoption of AI by businesses. In conclusion, the adoption of cloud computing and the increasing use of AI are two future trends in information systems infrastructure that are expected to significantly impact businesses and their competitive advantage. Cloud computing provides businesses with scalable and flexible IT infrastructure, allowing them to quickly adapt to changing market conditions. AI enables companies to gain insights from data and optimize operations, enhancing their decision- making processes. The increasing adoption of these trends, as supported by the aforementioned references, highlights their potential to revolutionize the way businesses use IT to gain an advantage over their competitors.
