Module 2 Week 2
Discussion Threat: Mindset and Grit
First, I would like to start saying that I personally think that I have a growth mindset. This is
because I am a strongly believer that life is a lifelong learning journey. My entire life I have been
looking on things on how to improve on everything that I do. I have developed a powerful
mindset to the point that I am now addictive to knowledge.
Every time I encounter an obstacle, I like to think on different ways that this experience can help
me grow and improve. Also, I tend to think that this is a challenge for me and a way to mold my
character for betterment.
I my opinion, there is no success if there is no effort. But I also think in order to make an effort,
us, as human beings, need some sort of motivation in order to achieve something in life. Some
people call it a purpose. I know that effort does not come by itself, there must be a vision or a
goal to serve as motivation.
I see other people success as a way to learn. I can learn from my mistakes but also, I can learn
from other people success and mistakes as well. Success is, in my perspective, the reason for
happiness in life. If for some reason, you find yourself stuck in a fixed mindset, think about your
goals and all the things you can achieve if you fully develop your potential and strive.
Since I was a child, I was always passionate in knowing how my external world worked. I
remember my dad. He was always giving me a present for every special occasion. He was
always giving me a toy with some sort of electronics inside. I can be a remote controller car, an
airplane or a controlled remote boat. I used to open them up instead of playing with them. This is
because I wanted to know how those circuit worked. This is why I have decided to become an
engineer.
Studying engineering is not an easy task. My strategy number one for perseverance is to have a
clear vision of what I really want to achieve in life. Also knowing that God is always by my side
helping me and giving me the strength that I need to continue. This is enough motivation to keep
me going and fulfill my goals.
I believe that here is no skill that cannot be learned without the proper effort. I agree with Angela
Duckworth’s Grit Scale. Talent is defined as a natural abilities or aptitudes a person is born with
or develops early in life. Skills on the other hand, is the result of training, practice and
experience.
My personal opinion is that talent with no practice is just a raw talent. One thing that is worth to
mention is that practice and training can help individuals unlock and enhance their natural
abilities.
For example: if a person has a natural talent with numbers and develops that skill to its full
potentials, that person will probably become a great mathematician. But if not developed nor
practice, is just a raw talent.
As an engineer, I will be constantly learning new thing because the world is in constant change. I
know that I must develop my full potential by having good learning habits, practicing,
developing my skills and perseverance. I am I the process of learning at this time and I know that
I have to feed my brain with good and up to day knowledge. It is very important to understand
that if we as students don’t develop our skills to its full potential, we will struggle in order to be
successful in our career and also in life.
In conclusion, developing our skills as engineers is crucial for several reasons: problem-solving,
will help in developing innovating ideas, adaptation to new technologies, we will be more
efficient, for our professional credibility and personal growth. The continuous development of
skills is important and essential for success.
