Individual Project Deliverable 1

Problem Description:
When going out of the house a problem many people face is their cell phones
losing battery. With this solar powered battery pack, no longer will people have to worry
about losing their connection. There are many battery packs and solar panel solutions
for phone charging that have been created. One major flaw that they all have is low
charging capacity or bulky solar panels. What customers want is an easy to carry and
inexpensive charging solution that can reliably be used.
Problem Statement:
Phone users need a charging solution that can charge without a power source.
Design Requirements:
Weigh 10lbs or less
Provide charging capabilities
Have at least 10000mAh
Flexible solar panels
Require no assembly
Be small enough to be carried when not in use

Convenience was the most important aspect of the design. The convenience
refers to how likely the solar powered charger would be used as a charging solution
versus using a plug-in charger. The next important aspect was the portability since the
charger not being portable would make it as convenient as just using a regular charger.
Having the design be portable is also important because the customer would more likely
use a charger on the go and would therefore be carrying it or having it on their person.
The cost and charging capacity were ranked the lowest. This is because the charging
capacity is irrelevant when the solar panels are being used since they can charge
whenever they are in sunlight which would be the ideal use case for this product. The
cost is also not as important as different designs can have different price points while
providing a different product whether it’s a higher capacity charger or a waterproof
design.

This design was made to work as a sunshade as well as a solar charger. It fits in a cars
windshield and because of how large of a surface area it covers it can hold a lot of
charge. It is made of cloth material with flexible solar panels on one side and it can be
placed on any flat surface for use.
This design is a backpack with a fan on the back and solar panels on the front. The fan
is both to cool off the battery and the wearer. The backpack would be able to hold
multiple devices and is made of waterproof material. The solar panels are also
waterproof and made of flexible material.
This design is an umbrella that is made from solar panels. The base of the umbrella has
a charging block and an area in the charging block to hold a device. The umbrella is
completely waterproof and can be used as a beach umbrella or as a shield from the
rain.

From the decision matrix we can see that the backpack design beats the other two
because of its greater convenience and portability as well as being the most cost
effective option. It did not have the best charging capacity but since the portability and
convenience were the highest weighted factors it had the highest score.
