Individual Project Deliverable 1 Problem: Parents have very few options for safe sleep options for children that are no longer newborns but also not toddlers either. When I had my first child, we thought we had everything we needed for our son to sleep not only safely but comfortably. We had his bassinet and his crib before he was ever even born. But once he outgrew our bassinet, we quickly discovered that we didn’t quite want to put him into the crib yet. Rock and Plays were just taken off the market, we didn’t feel safe with co-sleeping, and to us he wasn’t quite ready to sleep in his crib in his own room. Problem Statement: Parents need a compact, comfortable, and safe sleep option for their child that can fit next to their bedside. Requirements : Must take up less space than a crib Must be able to break down for mobility Must be supportive and keep babies head at an incline during sleep Must be able to rock or vibrate to help ease baby to sleep. Must be able to hold baby between 4 months and 18 months Criteria: Easy to assemble Safety Comfortable How cleanable

But it was kind of surprising comfortability was the second most important criteria to parents. There was a thought of putting cost as one of the criteria but most parents seeking alternative sleep options are willing to splurge on a product that can be packed for travel and yet durable enough to last up to 18 months of age. Design #1 – Design number 1 incorporates the basic idea of a hammock. With a collapsible aluminum frame and a breathable mesh to allow baby to sleep comfortably and regulate temperature. Mesh is machine washable. Design #2 – Design number 2 incorporates a rocking chair style base with a solid form chair covered with a breathable fabric that is machine washable. The chair and base click together and apart for storage. Chair also has a 5 point safety harness to keep child from flipping during sleep.
Design #3 – Design #3 is similar to # 2 in the plastic base with breathable cover but it hangs from an included heavy duty ceiling anchor safe for up to 300 lbs. This design option also has the 5 point safety harness to keep child secured and is able to be swung to help ease that fussy child to sleep. Criteria Weight Design 1 Design 2 Rating Score Rating Score Easy to assemble .07 3 .21 5 .35 Safety .60 1 .6 5 3.00 Comfortabl e .21 7 1.47 3 .63 Ease of cleaning .12 7 .84 3 .36 Total 1 3.12 4.34 In the decision model it is determined that design #2 is the highest graded. While it is beat out in comfort by design 1 by a significant margin, parents cannot help but be attracted to the much higher safety rating when it comes to their child. We can now “put to rest,” the need for designing a new, improved, alternative sleep option for parents and their young child.
