Working Thesis Statement: The Treaty of Versailles brought an end to World War I, but the failure of the treaty allowed Adolf Hitler to rise to power and created the path for World War II. Primary Sources Hitler: 1889-1933 Faulkner, Donna. Hitler: 1889-1933. [Place of publication not identified]: New Word City, Inc, 2015. https://search-ebscohost-

. The author, Donna Faulkner, explorers Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and how he manipulated the German people to support his desire to make Germany a superpower. While this source focusses a lot on Hitler and the evil things, he did to prove he was a monster, the book allows insight on how Hitler rose to power. This source aligns with my other sources in showing how Hitler rose to power, but there are some differences on what this author believes was the catalyst to Hitler rising to power compared to other sources I will utilize. I chose this source to focus on the rise of Hitler and what avenues were present at that time to allow him to succeed and lead Germany into another great war. Although this source focusses on other avenues like Hitler’s childhood, I will focus on the years leading up to the end of World War I and the beginning of World War II. . Robert Lansing was a lawyer, diplomat, and from 1915 to 1920, he served as President Woodrow Wilson’s Secretary of State. This source gives an insight from a source that was present during the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. It allows my research to identify and focus on some of the reasons why the Big Four chose certain stipulations that affected their country specifically over what may have affected other countries involved in the signing of the treaty. Lansing was not in complete agreement with President Wilson or some of the other drafters of the treaty. I chose this resource due to Lansing being present during the development and signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and his difference of opinion on the treaty and how his insight may have allowed the treaty to succeed. Secondary Sources A War to Be Won Murray, Williamson, and Millett, Allan R.. A War to Be Won
. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2000. Accessed January 11, 2024. ProQuest Ebook Central. A War to Be Won focusses on the global conflict of World War II and tells the full story of the battles on land, sea and air. The first several chapters of this book speak about the signing of the treaty and the failures that followed. It dives into the appeasement strategy and how that allowed Hitler to ignore the treaty and align himself in a position to invade Poland. This source aligns with my other sources in explaining why the treaty failed and how this led to World War II. I will utilize this resource because it dives into the Treaty of Versailles and how the treaty failed,
which launched the appeasement strategy, and eventually led to the rise of Hitler and the invasion of Poland to begin World War II. The Treaty of Versailles: A Concise History Neiberg, Michael S. The treaty of versailles: A concise history
. New York: Oxford University press, 2017. The author provides an authoritative account of the challenges, development, and signing of the Treaty of Versailles which led to the end of World War I and what was believed to be a peaceful long-lasting treaty. This source identifies some of the challenges the drafter has in the writing of the treaty. It will direct my research in knowing what areas of the treaty has the most impact on the German population. This source align with the following source on the development and the signing of the treaty, along with how choices were made by the drafters to directly hurt Germany and the German people. I chose this resource because it will help with understanding how the articles within the treaty hurt Germany, not only with their military, but economically, loss of territory, and how it led to shaming the German people which helped Hitler rise to power. This source discusses the critique of the Paris Peace Conference and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The arguments made by the attendees of the conference were ignored and the Big Four were the ultimate decision makers in the drafting of the treaty. This source supports the idea that the treaty was a failure from the start, and it did not have the backing of many of the participants. I will utilize this source to show how the signing of the treaty was not a collective rejoice by many who attended the conference, and it was known at that time that the treaty would most likely fail and lead to another world war. This source supports my thesis by showing how the failure of the treaty helped Hitler rise to power.
