1-1 Discussion: The 1940 Class Hello class, World War I, also know as the “Great War,” begun in 1914 and ended in 1918. Approximately 17 million people died in the war and approximately 20 million were wounded. The Great War involved the Central Powers, ( Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) and they fought the Allied Powers, (Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Canada, Japan and the United States). The legacy of World War I is the great loss of life, economic devastation, and political influences over others. World War I affected the political powers of the times, their decision-making, and their realization that war has a devastating affect on countries but cannot always be ignored or the option to not get involved. World War I was the steppingstone to World War II. Political leaders at the time knew that the war had cost them dearly, and they wanted a way to ensure wars like this would never happen again. They wanted accountability and for those accountable to be know across the world and a show of punishment that would happen to those involved. In 1919 the Versailles Treaty was signed. This treaty would place the blame of the war on Germany and would add sanctions and reformation to Germany’s current leadership. The treaty was a logical strategy after the war. If enforced, it would have crippled Germany in the long run and would have most likely prevented them from being a global threat two decades later. The roots of Fascist ideology grew and took hold over Germany and Italy. Due to the great depression, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini were able to take power over their perspective countries. Once in power, Hitler’s goal was to dismantle the Versailles Treaty. The Allies at the time believed the Versailles Treaty would keep the world safe, but instead the treaty failed due to the lack of defending it. The failure came when the Allies failed to enforce the treaty and adopted an Appeasement policy approach. The Appeasement policy was not logical and was a horrible strategy. Essentially the Allies ignored Germany’s disregard of the treaty and took no measurement to enforce it. They pursued appeasement in hopes that they would avoid any further conflict. Some allies even went so far as to offer Germany diplomatic concessions and major industrial loans. The United States withdrew into isolationism, Britain followed suit, and France was left vulnerable due to their location in the region. Germany would ultimately make strategical moves that sometimes were obvious but ignored, by positioning troops and resources along borders in the preparation to invade. By following and allowing the Appeasement policy to take hold, the Allies allowed Germany to gain the support, power, and resources needed to start World War II. I view the Appeasement policy like this, if I tell my daughter she is grounded this weekend, but I allow her to go out on Saturday, so I don’t have to engage in a conflict with her, I have essentially done nothing and allowed her behavior to continue and not change. This is how the Allies treated Germany and the reason they never changed their behavior or ambitions.
