Direc±ons:
A±er you have completed this week’s course readings and lectures, test your
understanding by comple²ng this Comprehension Matrix. As you read/and or listen to course
materials, use the chart to make notes. Key ideas from the lectures are already listed for you.
For each key term, add a descrip²on or defini²on, the ²me period (exact dates, ²me periods or
²me frames are acceptable) and explain why this term or idea is significant as it pertains to the
larger discussion from the lecture. For this first week, I have completed the first term for you as
an example. In addi²on to the key terms, you will also answer the three review ques²ons.
Key Terms/Concepts
Short descrip±on or
defini±on of term
Time
Period
Why was this term or
concept from the
lecture significant?
Free Soil Movement
Goal was to stop the spread of
slavery westward.
Favored southern aristocracy.
Threatened the ideal of free
labor and farmers.
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part
1: Free Soil & The Compromise
of 1850").
1848
It is a huge economic issue
in the U.S. but it also led to
the end of slavery. Many
felt that it was necessary
because the new land
gained power imbalance
(Vicente, "House Divided,
Part 1: Free Soil & The
Compromise of 1850").
1850 Compromise
CA admi³ed as a free state
Abolished slave trade in D.C.
Le± the decision of slavery up
to a vote in New Mexico and
Utah territories
Included a Fugi²ve Slave law
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part
1: Free Soil & The Compromise
of 1850").
1850
This was used to make
many par²es in the U.S.
happy. Many different
groups had different
concerns and this is how
the government appealed
to them (Vicente, "House
Divided, Part 1: Free Soil &
The Compromise of 1850").
It was said that the
compromise prevented a
civil war from happening
and diffused tension
between different states
(Vicente, "House Divided,
Part 2").
Fugi²ve Slave Act (1850)
The most controversial act
Was passed because
1850
This caused tensions between
aboli²onists and an²-
aboli²onists. It also caused
southerners were angry about
things like the underground
railroad, which helped slaves
escape slavery.
This helped protect slave-
owner's rights to get their
slaves back
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part
2").
free black people to be
kidnapped and sold into
slavery in the south
(Vicente,
"House Divided, Part 2").
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
An an²-slavery novel
A story about two slaves told in
their perspec²ves on slavery
and their stories.
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part
2").
1852
This novel put into
perspec²ve what life was
like for slaves. It made
whites realize that slaves
went through cruel,
inhumane punishment
(Vicente, "House Divided,
Part 2").
Bleeding Kansas
Se³lers came to se³le farms,
but with split thinking. Some
wanted it to be a free state
while others wanted slavery.
This caused figh²ng to break
out and even lead to a man
dying (Vicente, "House
Divided, Part 3").
1854-1856
This caused tension
between the people in the
U.S. and led to a lot of
violence (Vicente, "House
Divided, Part 3").
Dred Sco³ Decision
Supreme court case
Declared blacks (slaves and
free) were not ci²zen of the
U.S.
Declared the Missouri
Compromise uncons²tu²onal,
thus permi´ng slavery in its
territories
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part
3").
1857
This is very important
because there was many
people who disagreed with
slavery and wanted to see
it end, but not because
slavery was wrong, but
because they had
something to lose if slavery
was kept, so they were not
happy about this decision.
There was a division
between people when this
happened (Vicente, "House
Divided, Part 3").
Elec²on of Lincoln/House
Divided
In 1860, Lincoln won as a
republican president
House Divided refers to a
speech given by Lincoln where
he declares that America must
choose a side on slavery and
he would choose to get rid of
slavery when given the chance
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part
3").
1860
1858
This made a lot of the
people afraid because they
knew when Lincoln became
president that he would get
rid of slavery so their whole
lively hoods would be taken
away. On the other hand,
slaves and aboli²onists
were happy because they
would finally be free
(Vicente, "House Divided,
Part 3").
Weekly Review Ques±ons
To help you make connec²ons, answer the following ques²ons. You may want to test your
knowledge by interac²ng with peers or asking your instructor for clarifica²on.
An idea presented in this module that presented the strongest reac²on to my exis²ng views or
beliefs about the past was aboli²onists. I used to think that they supported the end of slavery
because slavery was wrong and inhumane, when in reality only a small percent of them did.
Most supported the cause because slavery was in the way of them ge´ng land and money
(Vicente, "House Divided, Part 3").
An idea presented in this module that is most confusing is the Dred Sco³ Decision. At the ²me,
it seemed to me that the country was progressing majorly, so when I learned that the court took
a step back and made this ruling. This confused me because the county was progressing, but I
guess not (Vicente, "House Divided, Part 3").

An idea presented in the module that is the most relevant to today is the compromise. The 1850
compromise was just what the ²tle implied, a compromise between the different people/states and their
different beliefs. Today, there is also a lot of compromise between different beliefs and people, but in the
end, whatever is the most beneficial is what is past (for the most part).
