Latin America’s source of cheap labor for the U.S. There was an unequal relationship
between the U.S. and Latin America. The U.S. began to manifest the idea of manifesting their
destiny and became dominate. The U.S. presidents that backed the taking were Jefferson,
Jackson, and Roosevelt.

of U.S. imperialism in the twentieth century?
The main proponents and beneficiaries of empire building were merchants, plantation
owners, and speculators. The United Fruit Company.

How did the notion of “Manifest Destiny” support the imperialistic approach of
United States in the 19th century towards Latin America? How were “scientific theories”
linked to this ideology in the U.S?
Manifest Destiny showed that the U.S. thought they had the right to be dominate over Latin
America by nature, therefore they could not have independence. One of the theories was
eugenics, where studies showed that whites have bigger brains than Latin Americans and are
therefore smarter and dominate.
4-
What aspects of the reading were new information to you?
What did you take out this
reading? Explain
The extent of the Manifest Destiny that the U.S. had partaken in was astounding to me. I
didn’t realize how much land the U.S. had taken until I read this article. What I took out of
this reading was the U.S. was very greedy in terms on land ownership in present America by
thinking it automatically belonged to them.
