Country
How did Communists come to
power in this country?
Major Events/Leaders/Initiatives related
to this Communist movement
Decline / Reform of Communism
What factors led to the collapse or decline of
Communism in this country? What leader(s) inside or
outside of their society played a role in the decline or
reform of Communism in this country?
USSR
The
Provisional Government
was
established under the liberal and
social-democratic government;
however, the Bolsheviks refused to
accept the government and revolted
in October 1917, taking control of
Russia. Vladimir Lenin, their leader,
rose to power and governed between
1917 and 1924.
i
n Russia, efforts to build communism began
after Tsar Nicholas II lost his power during
the February Revolution, which started in
1917, and ended with the dissolution of the
USSR in 1991.
Gorbachev's decision to allow elections with a
multi-party system and create a presidency for
the Soviet Union began a slow process of
democratization that eventually destabilized
Communist control and contributed to the
collapse of the Soviet Union.
China
In October of 1949, after a string of
military victories, Mao Zedong
proclaimed the establishment of the
PRC; Chiang and his forces fled to
Taiwan to regroup and plan for their
efforts to retake the mainland.
The history of the Chinese Communist Party
began with its establishment in July 1921. A
study group led by Peking University
professors Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao to
discuss Marxism, led to intellectuals
officially founding the Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) in July 1921.
The 1931 Japanese invasion of Manchuria
began a chain of events that led to the
eventual communist overthrow of China in
1949. For years, the Nationalist government of
Chiang Kai Shek had worked to suppress
rebellions by the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP).
Evaluate the extent to which Communist movements impacted women’s rights / feminism in China and Russia.
During the spread of communism, the women were able to generally enjoy more rights, since everybody is considered equal, and women were now able to
own land which they didn't before. In Russia, right after the new communist government was established more women rights were imposed immediately.
Women were now equal in marriage and were mobilized from the countryside’s to industrialize.
Evaluate the extent to which the process of
economic reform
in the Soviet Union and China were similar in the 1950 to 1992 time period.
In the Soviet Union, under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, the Russians embraced many material values of Western capitalist societies and were like the new
nations of the 20th century, all of which were seeking development. This involved a frontal attack on long-standing inequalities of class and gender, an effort
to prevent the making of new inequalities as the process of modern development unfolded, and the promotion of cultural values of selflessness and
collectivism that could support a socialist society.
