Alexis Oliveras 1. Using the following reading, find three things you did not know about slavery and list them. Think of one thing you would like to know more about and write it down. Three significant findings in the article were in 1525, 213 captives from Sao Tome landed in Santo Domingo, marking probably the first slave voyage from S Africa to the Americas. After 1595 Angola became the leading source of slaves for Spanish America later it contributed about one-third of Africans brought into Cuba and Cuba received most of its slaves (710,000) in the 19th century. While reading the slave culture article, I became curious about what happened to the slaves once they arrived in Cuba. I was aware that During the 18th century Cuba depended increasingly on the sugarcane crop and on the expansive, slave-based plantations that produced it but is that all the slaves were used for? 2. Select one of the following databases: Review the database carefully, and write a short statement on what you consider is the most significant finding. Images of slavery were chosen as the database. Every artist had a distinct idea they wanted to bring to life, and what stood out to me the most were the enslaved men, women, and children represented in various ways. For instance the most significant findings to me were a woman on her knees being branded on her back by a white man with several African and European onlookers with a ship in the background. Metal Branding Irons with Owners' Initials as well as kidnapping of a free person of color to sell him as a slave. Slaves were not beings, but instead property that was used to the maximum extent possible for the benefit of the white man.
