HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. Identify the topic you chose to explore:  I chose the Creation of Earth Day in the Climate Change and Environmental Issues research topic list. Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.  Unfortunately, and sadly I must admit, there is not much about Earth Day that I am aware of. I do know that it is in April each year. Without starting any research, when I think of Earth Day, I think of everyone planting trees and being more mindful about how what they do and what they use effects our world. I do know there is an Environmental Policy or policies out there. I think of how we recycle, and how we recently had a huge push to reusable shopping bags at grocery stores and there are no longer plastic bags available for us while shopping. I believe there are environmental factors that my vehicle must pass each year during my inspection as well to make sure the car is not adding anything toxic into the environment. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.  While I may not currently be well versed in this subject matter, I do believe it is highly important. We have one world to live in. As technology advances and we create new things, we were not always considering how it affected the air that we need to breathe. When they created the car, it solved a problem. At that point in time, I do not believe they were considering the impact on the air with the pollutants from the vehicle. Where now a days, we are looking at electric cars utilizing much less gasoline, as well as limiting the toxins that we are putting into the air. If we look at the plastic bags that we would get from the grocery store, many of us have a stash of them in our home, but we only need so many. The bags are often referred to as one time use bags. For some, we bring our groceries home and then either trash or recycle those bags once we unload our groceries. I know different recycling centers have different rules or regulations for what is considered to be recycling. For those bags that end up in the trash, they are now sitting in a landfill somewhere and not breaking down. For myself, I know on an average trip to the grocery store I may end up with 10-20 bags each trip. In one month, I am looking at possibly 80 single use bags going into my garbage, and that is if I didn’t double bag them for strength. Reusable bags can be a slight pain, and need to be washed but they are typically stronger and can make such an impact on the world. I just need to remember to bring them with me. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.  I think in modern society we are more aware of our footprint in this world. You may hear about someone’s carbon footprint. We may switch to paperless billing to save on paper being mailed to us, and the trees needed to be cut down to produce that paper. I recently saw on ad for an electronic banking account that would plant trees on your behalf for all emissions saving transactions that you handle through your banking app. I work at a non-profit that manufactures 1

copy paper. We used to sell majority non-recycled. Now our sales for 30% or 100% recycled are being requested more even though that are sold at a higher price. People are starting to value saving trees over how much the paper costs their bottom line. We see ads for people “going green”. Thanks to technology and science, there are more studies about the condition of our planet and how sustainable it is for our futures. As we learn more about how the past how affected our planet, we can learn more on how to change to prevent any further damage and protect the status of the one world that we have to live on. 2
