Unit 7 reading notes 4.A - A Brief Guide to Analyzing and Writing about Primary Sources What Are Primary Sources? - Primary sources are documents and materials created by people who were eyewitnesses to or participants in events that historians analyze to understand the past. What Are Secondary Sources? - The essays, articles, and books historians write about past historical events are called secondary sources since historian are often not eyewitnesses or participants in the events they study. EXAMPLES: For example, a journal written by an English slave trader about his experiences along the coast of West Africa in 1693 is a primary source. A book written by a historian in the year 2001 that uses this journal to interpret some aspect of the African slave trade is a secondary source WHEN READING A PRIMARY SOURE IDENTIFY THE AUTHOR, AUDIENCE, AND RELIABILITY. 4.B - Freedom Petition of Prince Hall This freedom petition from 1777 was presented to the Massachusetts General Court by Prince Hall, a free black man - TO SUM UP THE ARTICLE HE ADVOCATING FROM THE RIGHT OF FREEDOM, HAPPINESS, AND PROPERTY FOR AFRICAN0AMERICAN. 4.C - Natural Rights "Of the Natural Rights of Colonists" - The colonists are by the law of nature freeborn, as indeed all men are, white or black.– enslavement was a violation of these so called natural rights 4.D - Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence is a primary source available from the National Archives. - We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of Happiness.
