Introduction to Histology: Cartilage and Bones Observations Take a picture and insert it in the appropriate section below. Also record the total magnification needed to best view the object. Total magnification = (ocular lens power) × (objective lens power) Hyaline cartilage Indicate the chondrocytes, lacunae, and perichondrium. Magnification used:100x C- The chondrocytes, L-Lacunae,P-Perichondrium Fibrocartilage Indicate the chondrocytes, lacunae, and perichondrium.
C- chondrocytes, L- lacunae, P- perichondrium. Magnification used:400x
Compact bone Indicate osteon, lacunae, canaliculi, and central canal. Magnification used:400x O-osteon, L-Lacunae, C-Canaliculi, CC- Central canal

Spongy bone Indicate an osteocyte and the lacunae. Magnification used:400x O-Osteocyte, L-Lacunae
Data Table 1 Tissue type Best magnificatio n Tissue comparison What are the identifying features of this tissue, as compared to the other cartilage type? Hyaline cartilage 100x matrix has a pearly bluish-white hue and is shown to be amorphous and translucent Fibrocartila ge 400x There are chondrocytes and fibroblasts in this white, densely packed, opaque, tufted tissue. Tissue type Best magnificatio n Tissue comparison What are the identifying features of this tissue, as compared to the other bone type? Compact bone 400x Osteons and haversian systems are densely packed in compact bone.

Spongy bone 400x Cancellous (or sponge) bone is less dense and thus lighter than compact bone. Post-lab Questions 1. Why is cartilage located near joints or places of movement? Cartilage in the vicinity of joints or other points of movement is beneficial because it lowers friction. 2. How does different composition of the extracellular matrix change the structure and function of bone and cartilage? Cartilage is a thin connective tissue that is not vascularized and is resistant to compression. Bone is extremely sturdy due to its calcified matrix and dense vascular network. 3. Why is there an intricate canal system within bones? It helps cells absorb and store the mineral salts that give bone tissue its strength. 4. Under external forces, which type of bone will deform more - compact or spongy? Why? The diaphysis of long bones is formed by compact bone, which is dense and heavy, while the epiphysis is formed by spongy bone, which is pliable and smooth therefore, the spongy will deform. 5. A bone tumor develops when cells within bone divide uncontrollably, forming a mass of abnormal tissue that can disrupt the normal, organized structure of osteons in compact bone. How will this affect the bone's function? It causes tissue death and bone weakness, increasing the risk of fracture.
