Tahj Hugley History 1210 10/19/2022 The Government Needs to Step Up! With our country going through one of the hardest depressions, the government needs to step up and do a better job. This is a problem that not only the federal government needs to address but also the state and local as well since most of the issues we are facing are under their jurisdiction. Problems such as the allowance of child labor, unsanitary living conditions, and overcrowding are all happening under the nose of both the local and state governments. These problems can only be fixed with the attentiveness of the state and local governments focusing on the many impoverished neighborhoods. Although it is not as simple as creating a law and completely fixing the problem, there are legitimate ways to relieve it. One way would be to start at the local level and work towards the abolition of child labor, children should not have to experience the hardships that go along with working in a factory, especially one that is completely unsafe like sweatshops for even adults. This could be done by raising the age limit of available workers to age more reasonable such as 16. Another big thing that needs to be addressed is the unsanitary living conditions and overcrowding in many neighborhoods. An example of how bad the living conditions are is present when you look at the tenement dwellings in New York City. These conditions could be helped if the government were to use the taxes, they place on us towards the investment of the people living within the country. State law could be passed in which higher-paid citizens would be forced to pay slightly more than the percentage of their wage that the poorer citizens do so
that there is more money going around and relieving the issue. This may sound complicated, but it is an efficient way to get help for these communities, it may also make the wealthy exasperated but when looked at closely it will make the step towards equality much closer since taxes make the poor even poorer and keep the rich even richer. The argument could be made that it is not the responsibility of the rich to provide for the poor, which may be true, but the government must start thinking of the country rather than the individual during these times. Some would say that private individuals or private charities should step up and help, which is also true but the unlikeliness of it happening is very low. This is not a likely scenario due to the greed that Americans hold today, they would much rather ensure their financial success if it meant that others would suffer. You cannot as this to someone and expect them to agree, which is why taxes set upon them would be the only viable course of action. Some would also argue that if the churches believe so strongly against the current situation of the world then they should do something about it themselves. Although they have the platform to do so, most of the habitats of churches are poor themselves and would not be able to do much financially. Most of them are also people of color, meaning they are not treated as if they have a powerful voice in the nation, making it much harder to accomplish things. In conclusion, the government has many options regarding fixing/ relieving the current situation of our country and if they chose to do nothing then we know where they stand. The state of America is getting worse, and we cannot rely on the community anymore, we need our government to step up and ensure that the well-being of the citizens is prioritized.
