Tahj Hugley History 1210 11/10/2022 Reading Response 5 When the Great Depression started, many areas of the United States were affected but the south was hit harder than most. This was because the farmers in the south became custom to World War 1 times and were overproducing their product. When the depression hit, they tried to produce even more to pay of the debts that they procured which made things worse when the prices dropped. The south made majority of their money due to farming and since the economy was failing, so was their ability to make profit. The people in the south did not have enough money to buy these crops that these farmers were producing which caused a little over 65 percent of the farms to shut down. To try to fix the effects of the depression in the south, the sate governments imposed a sale tax and reduced government spending, but it worsened the problem. When President Roosevelt got into office, he proposed the “New Deal”, which was his promise to get America out of the depression. He focused in on the south since they were hit the hardest and proposed a way to help the farming aspect of the economy. He encouraged farmers to reduce their production of crops due to the overproduction problem. Huey long critiqued the ideas of Roosevelt since he believed them to be too conservative and believed that its efforts to get the country out of its depression was short lived. He wanted a more fast-paced plan and did not want to wait a long time for the economy to be fixed. Long proposed his own plan for relieving the nation called “Share Our Wealth”, that would have had the federal government take
the money of extremely wealthy citizens and give them to the impoverished citizens through a guaranteed income.
