Tahj Hugley 10/09/2022 History 1210 Reading Response 3 After the civil war, the country attempted to “reconstruct” the south and introduce African Americans to society. This plan was in motion before the civil war ended but it worked to unify the country again after it was divided. A major development during the reconstruction period was the emancipation proclamation brought forward by President Lincoln. The emancipation proclamation was intended to free all the slaves in the south but only a few were freed due to the resistance of slave owners in the south. The emancipation proclamation was an important part of the newly established goal of the civil war but for African Americans, it was a small step towards greater things, such as the reconstruction amendments. Some other very important things that came from the reconstruction plan were the ratifications of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments. The thirteenth amendment was the biggest for enslaved African Americans since it declared that owning slaves in the United States was illegal. This was not enough though, African Americans were still thought of as less than so the fourteenth Amendment ensured that if you were born on American soil, you were an American. The fifteenth amendment ensured that African American men could vote in the United States, even though it excluded women it still was a huge development for African Americans as a whole. Reconstruction did what African Americans have always dreamed of and that is to be free from slavery and have a place in society as a person and not as someone thought of as three-fourths a person. It opened a new sense of black freedom and finally paved a way for African Americans to be on the same political level as white men. Freed slaves were now able to live their lives and have families without fear of separation. Although there were some people out there that did not accept this, it did not change the fact that African Americans were now legally free.
