Tahj Hugley History 2110 10/14/2022 Reading Response 4 With the Homestead Act of 1862 allowed Americans to move west for several reasons; a few being gold, economic prosperity, the thought of being a cowboy, the opportunity to own land, and farming opportunities. The promise of gold in the west brought many people from around the states mine gold and become rich. Although it was a great incentive, another huge reason was for economic prosperity which involved owing land and using this land to open farming opportunities. This allowed people to earn money that were not possible in the east due to the climate and crowded area. Another big thing was the thought of being a cowboy and living life like one since they were idolized during that time. One significant obstacle that the people in the west faced were the Native Americans that lived there. They had raiding parties that would invade certain camps or neighborhoods and mutilate the men while keeping the women. They would rape the women and do unimaginable things to the men such as skinning them. The Comanches were the main ones who would conduct these raids but after President Grant heard about the Salt Creek Massacre, he ended his peace and started to fight back. When the Natives would invade the people in the west would believe that they were in control of some type of magic to do what they did. The people in the west feared the Comanches since they believed that they used magic to invade the people. This perception of them changed after the Adobe Walls raid, in which involved the Natives trying to raid a village and failing since the villagers hid inside of a building
that was raid proof. This showed that the Natives were not using magic and were not impossible to beat. The Natives were finally defeated at the Battle of Wounded Knee (1890), the Natives were performing a ritualistic dance and were ambushed then massacred.
