The History of Halloween Halloween is a very old holiday. It started as a festival. The festival marked the end of the growing season. People during this time thought that the dead would come back and destroy all of the crops they had gathered for the year. To keep the spirits from destroying their crops, they would build fires. They would also dress up in masks or costumes so spirits didn’t know who they were. Skeletons and ghosts have become symbols of Halloween today. Halloween started as a harvest festival and is now celebrated differently all over the world.
The History of Halloween The word Halloween is a shorter version of the name All Hallows’ Evening. Halloween’s origin can be traced back to a Celtic (Kell-tic) festival known as Samhain (Sah-win), which was observed on November 1, All Souls Day. Samhain was a celebration to mark the end of the harvest season. The Celtic people believed that on October31, the dead would return to destroy the harvest people had stored for winter. The festival of Samhain usually involved bonfires. The fires were believed to ward off the evil spirits. People would also wear masks or costumes so the spirits could not recognize them. Bonfires were thought to attract insects and bats, which may be why bats have become associated with Halloween. The idea of evil spirits that surrounded All Hallows Eve is probably why ghosts, witches, and skeletons have become the spooky symbols of Halloween that we associate with the holiday today. Halloween is a holiday that is celebrated in many countries around the world!
