HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Great London Smog Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event. Exploring my research question about the influences the Great London Smog had on more air quality committees improved my understanding of the New York smoke hazards by allowing me to gain insight to the precautions that were put into place. Many health officials advocated that locals remain indoors and if they needed to go outside, they should wear N-95 masks to reduce health issues from small particles entering their lungs (Baldwin, 2023). With the knowledge and influences from many health and air quality committees, the CDC advised locals to stay indoors, close windows, use air purifiers, and recirculate the air in vehicles to help minimize the possible health damages (Baldwin, 2023). Since air quality committees were better prepared than the incident of the Great London Smog, this allowed hospitals to become better prepared for the possible health effects that were to come. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events. Biased perspectives could influence what is known about both the Great London Smog and the New York smoke haze by potentially hindering information concerning one group over the other and over- generalizing precautions. Everyone doesn't have the same immune system as the next person, so when considering how to address the health issues both events caused, one would need to examine the various side effects. If one is bias in how they report on the overall health effects, this could lead to accidentally leaving out information that could relate better with one group or another. Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. If the Great London Smog were told from a missing perspective, for example a social perspective, this could allow the narrative to focus more on different individual's side effects rather than generalized side effects. Different ages and races could be affected by the Great London Smog more than others and having more information concerning these groups will allow for future, individualized health precautions. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective. If the narrative of the New York smoke haze was told from a missing perspective, for example public education, this will allow people to understand different effects caused, not just health concerns. If the New York smoke haze was told by people in public education, this will allow the public to understand how these institutions had to adjust to the smoke pollution and what precautions they needed to take to ensure youth safety.
