speech, court transcript, legislation, diary entry, photograph, artifact, map, broadside, circular, political cartoon, artwork, etc.) Provide a brief description of something you notice about the source, as if you were explaining to someone who can’t see it. This is a detailed encounter of what John Lawson not only saw but what he also encountered during his trip through the Carolinas. It details his day-to-day activities as well as his encounters. This is a picture of what appears to be the original legislation from woman during suffrage. It also has the signatures of the lawmakers that signed the end of women’s suffrage. Part 2: Observe its Parts Primary Source 1 Primary Source 2 Who wrote it or created it? Was it one person, or was it a group, like an organization? John Lawson The primary source comes from the records of the U.S. House of Representatives.
When was it made? 1709 1866 What are two things you know about the personal background or beliefs of the person or group who created it? (4- 5 sentences) From John Lawson’s Encounters we can understand what he was doing during this time. We can get a better understanding of what is happing on his day-to- day activities. John is meeting with different Native American’s and even going as employing Santee Jack to help guide him along his way. During his encounter he can see not only how the Native American tribes are surviving but he is also able to see disease come to their people. The House of Representatives as well of the Senate are being met with resistance from the women in the United States. The women are wanting equal rights for themselves and generations to come. Women have finally taken a stand and are standing up for what is right. At the time the law makers of America were all men and did not think that women should have the same rights as men. Was the source meant to be public or private? If public, who do you think was the intended audience? (4-5 sentences) Although this was originally recorded as a journal entry, I do believe that this was meant to be public knowledge. John Lawson was an English explorer and published his observation in a book titled “A Voyage to Carolina”. I think that his intended audience would have been the English that are interested in colonizing in the New World. With his findings he had the intention to inform and attract not only settlers but also investors. The Petition for Universal Suffrage was meant to be public. This petition is for the rights of women to be changed. This was put in place to amend the Constitution. Anything with this magnitude is to be shared with the public. Part 3: Interpret its Meaning: Historical Context Primary Source 1 Primary Source 2 Describe two other things that were happening at the 1. Colonial Expansion During this time European expansion was at its highest. Many different countries were all establishing 1. Thirteenth Amendment During this time the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the US Constitution abolishing slavery. This is

time the source was created. (4-5 sentences) not only colonies but trading posts throughout the New World. 2. Slave Trade During this time slave trade was at full swing. Many colonies in the New World were enslaving not only Africans but also Native Americans. They were also placing Europeans into indentured servitude to cover their expenses to travel to the New World. significate during this time it also allowed freed black men to have more rights that women currently had. 2. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 This was the first law that defined citizenship. This law also affirmed that all citizens are equally protected by the law. How does that context (or background information) help you understand why it wa s created? (4-5 sentences) The background information helps understand what John Lawson’s motivations for this journey was. He was trying to persuade investors as well as potential settlers to make the trip to the New Lands. He was also an author and was gathering information for his book to be able to publish. He was able to give firsthand encounters of his findings. The background information helps you understand what the women are currently facing. During the time leading up to the petition men have more rights than women. Also, during this time there was an end to slavery and currently freed slaves had more rights than women. This also helps us build a better understanding to what the women had to go through in order to help us get to where we are today as a nation. Part 4: Interpret its Meaning: Main Points and Purpose Primary Source 1 Primary Source 2 What is the main idea or point of the source? Use specific evidence from the source itself to support The main idea behind John Lawson’s Encounters Native Americans is to entail his journey in the Carolinas. It is also intended to detail his findings while there. Lawson comes in contact with the Santees during his time. Lawson also speaks of hiring Santee Jack which is a good hunter to help guide him during The main idea behind the Petition for Universal Suffrage is to focus on women’s rights. In particular the voting rights. Prior to the petition women did not have rights to vote or general rights as a citizen. With the help of Susan B Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton just to name a few they were able to petition the US
your answer. (4-5 sentences) this time. government to gain rights as citizens for women. Why do you think this primary source was made? Provide evidence from your prior responses to support your claim. (4-5 sentences) The primary source was made in order to give information about John Lawson’s encounters. The source is a day to day detail of the encounters that he had during this time. According to the detailed encounter Lawson speaks of not only coming in contact with Native Americans, but also details his encounters of watching them contract the diseases that were introduced to their immune systems for the first time. The main idea behind this primary source is to show documentation of the legislation that was passed during this time. The Petition for Universal Suffrage was a cry for women to be treated as individuals. Prior to this petition women did not have basic rights as citizens of the New World. Freed slaves prior to this had more rights than women. Part 5: Use it as Historical Evidence Primary Source 1 Primary Source 2 What are two historical questions this source could help you to answer? This manuscript can help us answer: What was the day-to-day activities that Lawson participated in? As well as it can answer how were the Native Americans affected by the disease that was brought over by the Europeans? This document can help us answer: Who were the legislators at the time the petition was signed? As well as it can answer who were the supporters? What are two pieces of information the source presents that you should “fact check” (verify as true) by The information that entails the location of Lawson’s exhibition will need to be fact checked. Also, I would like to fact check the tribes that he came in contact with. The information that you should fact check would be the original source from which this document came from. Also, the list of supporters would need to be fact checked.
checking other primary or secondary sources? This primary source shows one perspective on this topic. What are two other perspectives you should get to better understand this event or topic, and why? (4-5 sentences) This primary source shows the perspective of John Lawson. It would be beneficial to have an understand the perspective of the Native American tribes that he came into contact with. Lawson brought forth not only a new way of thinking with him, but he also brough disease that the Native tribes had never encounter before. It would also be of great knowledge to know Santee Jack’s perspective. He was with Lawson during this time so it would be a great source of information to know what he saw and encountered. This perspective is told by the US government. So, we are only seeing their side of this petition. It would help to have a better understanding of what the women during this time were facing and how they were feeling about this situation. It would also be beneficial to understand how the policymakers were thinking individually. We see that as a whole that they ultimately came to the decision to pass the petition but it would be great to know how they individually came to the decision. Reflection: What perspective do you bring to this topic and source? How does your background and the time in which you live affect your perspective? (4-5 sentences) My own personal perspective is this, although during this time it was one of exploration and one of conquering new lands. I feel that everyone should have been left alone. The lands of America were already owned by the Native American tribes. Yes, I do know that this in an unpopular perspective and opinion. However, the history details that just because they thought the Natives were uncivilized, they could take the land from them (which we all know that they did). I do not think the time in which I leave has any effect on my opinion. My perspective on the Petition for Universal Suffrage is that we as women are expected to keep the lives of our families going from day to day. With this in mind then we do have the right to have rights as citizens and the right to vote. We are however in my opinion still suffering til this day and do not receive the same rights that most men have. This I do believe is effected by growing up in a time where we have been giving some rights.
