Module 6 Short Responses – Question 1 Which source will you analyze using active reading strategies? Include the name of the article, the author, the publication, the date, and where you found it. Read your chosen source using the active reading strategies you learned on the previous page. Then, summarize the overall meaning and content of the reading. Write your summary below. Your summary should be at least one paragraph long. "Historical Misunderstandings and the Defeat of the Equal Rights Amendment" David E. Kyvig The Public Historian 18 p45-63 https://www-jstor-org.ezproxy.snhu.edu/stable/3377881?pq-origsite=summon&seq=1 The Equal Rights Amendment was first proposed in 1923 by feminist, and woman suffrage movement leader Alice Paul. It is an amendment that was proposed to the Constitution that would guarantee legal rights for all regardless of gender. A deadline of seven years was given for ratification of this amendment. By 1973, in terms of ratification, there were not enough votes, and an extension was given. Ultimately, in 1982 the ERA expired. While the ERA had many supporters, not all feminists, there were anti-feminists that opposed the amendment. During the time of this event, women were looked at to be wives and mothers, men could make a living and provide for the family. Some thought all legal protections would be lost as the result of the passing of the ERA. When I read this article, I feel that people were afraid of such a drastic change. Module 6 Short Responses – Question 2 What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid- 1970s? Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a contributory cause of the Boston busing crisis. I think one event that contributed to the Boston busing crisis is Brown v. Board of Education. At the time of this event, it was ruled that "racial segregation in public schools is unconstitutional" (MindEdge, 2023). The Supreme Court gave a task to integrate segregated districts. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, required school districts to speed up the integration process. The passing of a law by the Massachusetts state legislature that required "all segregated schools to integrate," in 1965 (MindEdge, 2023). Module 6 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three specific consequences of the Boston
busing crisis. "White flight," people would leave mixed communities to live in a predominantly white community. Boston's student population decreased drastically; the highest dropout rate was in 1971-1972; with the dropout rate coming in under the national rate in 1990. The Boston protests Module 6 Short Responses – Question 4 Describe one cause of the event you have chosen for your historical analysis (keeping in mind that there are many), and explain one piece of evidence from your research that you will use to support this assertion. Describe one consequence of the event, and explain one piece of evidence from your research that you will use to support this assertion. One cause of the ERA would be the Seneca Falls Convention. This was held in New York in July 1848. It was the first women's rights convention held and covered many issues relating to women. The Declaration of Sentiments was founded which states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal" (MindEdge, 2023).
