Your Answer: Option 2: Describe the impact of the 1928 Meriam Report The Meriam Report, also known as The Problem of Indian Administration, was a report commissioned by the Institute for Government Research in 1928 to investigate the conditions of Native Americans in the United States. The report combined narrative with statistics to criticize the | Department of Interior's implementation of the Dawes Act and overall condition on reservations and in Indian boarding schools. The report found that the federal government was failing at its goal of protecting Native Americans, their land and their resources. The conditions of poverty and disease among Indians made creating life and community difficult and meaningless. There was a sense of disregard for the Indigenous culture, thus a lack of funding for programs or appropriate education for children. The Meriam Report provided data used to reform American Indian policy through new legislation; The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. It influenced policies regarding land allotment, education and health care. The reports findings led to the movement for improved health conditions during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Meriam Report was the first general study to reveal just how oppressed the many generations of Native Americans were by the Federal governments' policies. Overall, the Meriam Report set the stage for new Indian policies based on actual data and not assumptions or ideology.
