Law Enforcement Courts Corrections School resource officers police officers who are stationed in schools and are responsible for safety and crime prevention in the school. School resource officers still have authority to detain students and make arrest, they are also involved in monitoring youth related issues and conducting presentations. A school resource officer should be patient and understanding when working with kids, they should also be able to communicate with youth in a way that isn’t too intimidating in order to form a connection and trust. Restorative justice is a more peaceful way of confronting conflicts and crime between people and the community without taking more serious approach such as an arrest. Restorative justice is used in schools with juveniles where the kids can both sit down with a counselor and talk about the problem and face it head on while trying to make a solution instead of using harsh punishments. A JPO or juvenile probation officer supervise youth who have been accused or committed of a crime. Similar to a regular probation officer for adults. The JPO will ensure that youth is complying with court orders and make frequent visits to the juveniles’ home, work and school. JPO’s work together with law enforcement, social services, parents and schools to help juveniles stay on track and out of trouble. JPO’s should know how to interact with adolescence and adults such as their parents and teachers, they should also be familiar with community resources. Law enforcement in school contributes to the school to prison pipeline more than it keeps students safe. Arrests in school and severe punishment set youth up for failure. Law enforcement should be aware of the minds of children and know that they should be treated more delicately than adults, arrests in schools or being detained should be an absolute last resource. The court process is similar to that of adults. With juveniles they can be sent to court by the police or referral, it is then decided weather the case will be solved in court or diverted or dismissed. If the crime committed was very serious the juvenile can be tried as an adult. Once the juvenile is found guilty, they are either sent to a detention center for youth or sent home with family, with certain orders like diversion or community service or they may have a jppo. In juvenile courts they use different wordings such as a petition instead of complaint, or adjudication instead of conviction. Juvenile courts do not have juries. They are also more focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment. When a juvenile is tried in court there family in also usually involved in the case. For someone working in juvenile courts it Youth and adults should be kept separately in correctional facilities because Juveniles have different needs than adults, and are not fully mentally developed and may have different focus problems than adults. For someone working in a juvenile correction facility it is important to be calm and have patients while maintaining authority, you should be a good listener build trust and be committed to ensure to make a difference in their lives.
