First: you need to identify that this was an image showing the Great Awakening. The Great Awakening could have been caused by: Economic and political status of younger children in New England, who started to move away from the strict rules of Puritanism after they no longer gained land from their father when they came of age A change in thought brought about by Enlightenment ideals A general belief that people were moving away from the church, and therefore were losing morals. This would cause a decline in overall society. Briefly explain ONE effect of the historical event/change depicted in the image. The growth of evangelical religion in North America, especially in the North. Challenge to the authority of traditional church leaders, especially the strict Puritanist lifestyle Focus on acceptance of all forms of Christianity in the American colonies Africans in the South were accepted by Baptist churches, which challenged the slavery heirarchy’s power Briefly explain an important difference between religion in New England, as shown above, and ONE of the following: Religion in other colonial regions during the period 1607-1754 New England colonies experienced the Great Awakening first, largely as a reaction to the strict Puritan lifestyle and a general movement of people from traditional forms of power. However o South: Anglicanism was largely already in place as a result of royal colony law; those in the South focused more on the family and the growth of the enslavement system, which evangelical teachings preached against (focus on the individual, not family, and the beginning of anti-slavery arguments) o Mid-Atlantic: Most of these colonies were founded out of religious conviction (as a safe haven for groups persecuted in Europe—and to some extent, the colonies), such as Quakers in Pennsylvania or Catholics in Maryland Religion in New England from 1620-1720 Religion in New England prior to this period was largely built around the Congregationalism of the Puritans, who preached strict devotion to religious rules and the family. Plymouth was founded by Separatists, called Pilgrims, who preached for a closed, tight-knit, religious community. Mass Bay was also Puritan and experienced the Salem Witch Trials near the turn of the 18 th century due to internal social and economic issues.
