Module 7 Short Responses – Question 1 Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in no more than one sentence, using proper grammar. Three historical lenses that could be applied to gain a fuller picture of the relationship between Natives and white settlers would be social, political, and economical. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 2 Revise the thesis statement at the top of this page to reflect a more complex view of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Your revised thesis statement should be longer than one sentence. There we several factors that created tension between the Natives and white settlers in the 19th century such as cultural and religious differences. These differences caused negative relations for most of the Native tribes at the time, although some did assimilate more quickly than others to the European influence. The most drastic and impactful factor that caused not only tensions, but also violence and war, was the dispute over land and the concept of ownership of land, of which the Natives had no concept of during the 19th century. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three historical lenses that you could use to look at the events described in the video you just saw. Three historical lenses that could be used when researching topics from the video I just saw are the religious, social, and military lenses. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 4 Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on what previous event or events? (Name one or two.) Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on the fact that the Wampanoag tribe was in desperate need of assistance due to their people being "devastated by disease, and they were being increasingly threatened by the Narragansett people of what is now Rhode Island."
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 5 Name one short-term consequence and one long-term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. One short term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims is that there was a commitment from "both sides to a mutual defense alliance against their common enemies." One long term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims is that, "Relations between the natives and the settlers began to fray as more Englishmen, both Puritans and non-religious settlers, arrived in New England, tipping the balance of power in favor of the English." Module 7 Short Responses – Question 6 How has your understanding of the historical event in your essay changed as a result of your research? Describe one instance of a misconception or a wrong idea you had about your topic that has been corrected after researching and writing about it. My understanding of the historical event in my essay has change as a result of my research in the way that I now have a better understanding of not only the impact and death toll of the event, but I know have a better understanding of why the event was as deadly as it was. After researching into the political and religious lenses to further my understanding of the event, I now know that not only did the potato blight contribute significantly to the deaths of millions, but the government response and religious hierarchy also played a significant role in the cause of so many lives lost. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 7 Name four historical lenses through which you could analyze the events of the Cherokee Removal. Specify one aspect of this event for each lens that you cite. One lens that could be used when researching this topic is the military lens, focusing on the subject of the Treaty of New Echota and the threat of the U.S. Army's "forced removal" of the Cherokee people. A second lens that could be used for this topic is the social lens, focusing on the subject of the small group of 400 Cherokee who were treaty supporters, of which there were 16,000 Cherokee at the time of the treaty who did not support the treaty. A third lens that could be used when researching this topic is the political lens, focusing on the Treaty of New Echota itself, and the impact it had on relations between the Cherokee and U.S. government.
A fourth lens that could be used for this topic is the economic lens, focusing primarily on the economic impact that the forced removal had for not only the Cherokee, but also for the citizens of the U.S. that had gained from the removal of the Cherokee. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 8 Agree or disagree with the following thesis statement: "The Treaty of New Echota was invalid, and the National Party was correct to oppose it." Cite at least three historical facts that support your position. I agree with this thesis statement. One historical fact that helps me support this thesis is the thousands of deaths and desertions that came from the treaty once relocation started. A second fact that supports my decision is the amount of money that was offered to the Cherokee in return for their land, 5 million dollars is nothing compared to how much land the Cherokee lost from the treaty. A third fact that supports this choice is how the original treaty had a clause for the Natives to have the option to become U.S. citizens if they gave up claims to their lands, but President Jackson rejected the provision, showing that there was ill-intent when it comes to the validity of the treaty being beneficial for all parties involved.
