Chapter 20: 20 th Century Wars and Revolution Response Questions (10 points each x 2 = 20 points) Briefly respond to the following two questions, based on what you read in the chapter. Type your answers below the question. 1. Compare and contrast the causes and motivations of the First and Second World Wars. What made the conflicts similar? What made them different? Offer details from the module’s readings and videos to illustrate your points. In a broad context, both World War I and World War II represented unprecedented conflicts conducted on a monumental scale unparalleled in history. These wars were similarly ignited by factors such as nationalism, imperialism, alliances, and militarism. In both instances, nations endeavored to disrupt the power dynamics in Europe to further their own interests. 2. Read Source 20.2: Hitler on Nazism. How does Hitler distinguish between Aryan and Jew? How does he understand the role of race in human affairs? What kind of political system does he advocate? Hitler believed that Aryans, a certain group of people, were responsible for creating all human culture, while Jews, another group, didn't have their own culture. He thought Aryans were the main reason for humanity's advancements and freedom. He saw them as essential for the nation's preservation and intellectual growth. On the other hand, he saw Jews as enemies of Aryans. He thought they were untrustworthy and dirty, and that they would harm each other out of hatred. Term Identifications (10 points each x 2 = 20 points) For the following, describe in about 3-5 sentences (roughly a paragraph) the meaning of the term and its significance. In other words, briefly explain the who/what/when/where of the term, but more importantly, tell WHY it was/is important to world history. Collectivization of Agriculture: During collectivization, individual farmers were compelled to abandon their own farms and join larger collective farms. This was part of a broader effort to rapidly industrialize the Soviet Union. Ho Chi Minh : A Vietnamese communist leader who resisted Japanese occupation during World War II, fought against the French until 1954, and continued the struggle against South Vietnam until 1975.
Video: World War I Oversimplified (10 points) Watch both parts of the video on MyLearning, and in about 2-3 paragraphs explain (in your own words) the significant causes and origins of the First World War. Was there any single factor that stood out as more important than the others? Why or why not? The outbreak of the First World War stemmed from four primary causes, yet it was ignited by the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. These main causes include nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and alliances. Among them, alliances stood out significantly. It's comparable to the feelings we experience today, albeit not to such an extreme degree, like the sense of betrayal when someone we trusted turns against us.
