Rebeka Depierro HIS 200: Applied History Southern New Hampshire University September 24, 2023 Final Writing Plan For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on the impact that Susan B. Anthony had on the women’s suffrage movement and the passing of the nineteenth amendment. The passing of the nineteenth amendment had a huge impact on history as it allowed for women to be able to vote. In examining the women’s suffrage movement, I will try to recreate the events leading up to the passing of the nineteenth amendment. Specifically, I will try to answer the following research question: How did Susan B. Anthony affect the women’s suffrage movement and the ratification of the nineteenth amendment? While looking at the events that led up to the ratification of the nineteenth amendment, I must also consider how this issue affected Susan B. Anthony in the ensuing years. Understanding how this event affected her will allow for us to better understand how she impacted the ratification of the nineteenth amendment and how she affected the women’s suffrage movement. Therefore, I have found a valuable secondary source titled “History of Woman Suffrage” that includes stories told by the heroines who fought in the movement. This source was written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton but was not published until 2018 by Seltzer Books. This source also includes personal reminiscences and brief biographical sketches. This source allows for us to see how women within this movement felt and how they saw the world through their eyes. Similarly, another source I would like to use is titled “The Selected Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony: An Awful Hush, 1895 to 1906” and that written by Ann
Gordon in 2013. This book one of six others is an extraordinary book of selected papers about death, endings, and silence. These papers were written during the time of the movement by women who were there. This source allows us to also see how women within the movement saw their world and the world around them. With the help of these secondary sources and a few primary sources we will be able to see the world through multiple lenses and see how Susan B. Anthony impacted this movement. Therefore, one primary source I would like to use is a list of speeches and writings from 1848-1877 by Susan B. Anthony. This list shows ways in which Susan B. Anthony worked to help with the women’s suffrage movement. This source allows for us to see individual events within the life of Susan B. Anthony that helped her impact the women’s suffrage movement which eventually led to the ratification of the nineteenth amendment. Similarly, the primary source titled “An account of the proceedings on the trial of Susan B. Anthony on the charge of illegal voting at the Presidential election in Nov. 1872, and on the trial of Beverly W. Jones, Edwin T. Marsh and William B. Hall, the inspectors of elections by whom her vote was received” talks about what happened during the trial of Susan B. Anthony who illegally voted in the 1872 presidential election. This source allows for us to see through the lens of multiple people how the trial affected the movement and how Susan B. Anthony affected the movement with her illegal voting. Based on my research to date I will try to support the following thesis. Susan B. Anthony had a large impact on the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the ratification of the nineteenth amendment because of her speech’s writings and associations with other women fighting for woman’s rights.
I plan to write this historical analysis for an audience that is unfamiliar with the history of the women’s suffrage movement such as ordinary everyday women who want to learn more about how we gained our right to vote. This group would need a great deal of background into the issue before being able to understand how Susan B. Anthony impacted the issue. In writing for this audience, I plan to focus on the major factors of the women’s suffrage movement which my audience will need to know to understand the impact of Susan B. Anthony. While devoting more than enough time to the specifics of who Susan B. Anthony was and how she became such an important person in the movement I will attempt to familiarize my audience with the women’s suffrage movement and the many different areas in which Susan B. Anthony had a part to play. For this audience, my message will be a clear and empowering one: The strength of one woman can impact a movement that changes the whole future as long as she believes in herself and her cause.
