CJ 305: Technology in Criminal Justice Southern New Hampshire University In 2013, Target and the consumers were victims of a cyber-attack that impacted not only the company but roughly 40 million of the consumer's accounts. During the cyber-attack, the offenders were able to obtain information from the customers such as their full legal names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, payment information such as card numbers and verification codes, and other personal data. The cyber-attackers were able to breach Target’s computer gateway through a third-party vendor. This security breach and the cyber-attack cost Target 18.5 million dollars in settlements to the consumers who were affected because of the crime. Because of the amount of people that were affected by the cyber-attack, this led to the settlement reaching multiple states. This crime greatly affected many Target consumers because due to the security breach, their personal information as well as their banking information was compromised and was able to be obtained. “Target previously provided free credit monitoring services for consumers affected by the breach. As part of a $10 million class-action lawsuit settlement reached in 2015, the company
also agreed to pay up to $10,000 to consumers with evidence they suffered losses from the data breach.” (McCoy, 2017). Target was greatly affected by the cyber-attack because it not only did not provide their consumers with information protection but also caused them to have to pay many affected consumers a large amount of money. As a consumer, I instill my trust in the company that I am providing my information to protect my information and have the correct security systems and software to help keep my information private. If my information did become a victim of a cybercrime like the consumers for Target had, I would fully expect that I would be compensated for the damage that the company's lack of security had caused. I have personally fallen victim to my bank account information being obtained through companies. My bank account information was obtained, and money was being withdrawn and sent to unknown websites and companies. I went to the bank and provided them with all my information, and they withdrew the rest of our funds, closed the bank account, and disputed the unauthorized activity, and reimbursed us. We were then able to create a new account
and deposit our funds into that account. It was a pain and a hassle to have to switch all our information over for bills and services, but we were then protected better.
