Holmes Ortiz Valencia College Professor Morales Written Assignment 2- Progressive Era December 3 rd , 2023 Written Assignment 2- Progressive Era 1. Compare the Populist and Progressive movements. Critically analyze why the Progressive movement seemed to have more success. What were the limitations of the Populist movement? The populist and the Progressive movements were two vital reform movements in American history. These movements emerged during the late 19 th century and early 20 th centuries. The Populist and Progressive movements both addressed social and economic issues. Though they were similar in the issues they addressed, they were differed in their approach and goals. The Populist movement was known as the People’s Party. They were mainly focused on the interested of farmers and laborers. They advocated for the introduction of a graduated income tax and the regulation of railroads. The Populist movement had a lot of support from rural communities who had economic hardships. The Populist movement did have some limitations. Their focus on rural issues were narrow. It mobilized farmers and laborer’s; it had trouble gaining support from others such as urban workers and the middle class. The Progressive movement emerged in the 20 th century and its goal was to address a broader range of social and economic issues. The Progressive Party focused on issues like political corruption, poverty, and inequality. They were advocated for women’s suffrage, and workers’ rights. The Progressive movement did see more success than the Populist movement. The Progressive movement attracted a wider range of people which gave them a greater political influence. The progressive movement had leaders such as Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. These were highly influential people in government and this allowed their movements idea’s and policies to be implemented easier. The Progressive movement did have more success this was a lot in part to the broader range of support, and timely reforms.
2. What did Progressives mean by “effective freedom”? How was this idea applied to Progressive reforms? The concept of “effective freedom” was central to the Progressive movement. Progressives honestly believed that true freedom could only be achieved if individuals have the means and the opportunities to exercise their rights and pursue their goals. Progressives believe that social and economic conditions needed to be improved to ensure that everyone could fully be able to participate in society, equally. Progressives applied the idea of “effective freedom”, they addressed many social and economic issues that were really holding back a lot of individuals ability to exercise their rights and live a fulfilling life. These issues were on workers’ rights, women’s suffrage, regulation of monopolies, and social welfare programs. Progressives removed many barriers and created conditions that allowed individuals to fully exercise their rights and pursue their goals. The “effective freedom” idea was a belief that true freedom required more than just legal rights but opportunities to exercise those rights. They aimed to improve conditions for individuals to be able to participate in society equally and pursue their goals. 3. Discuss the Progressive-era immigrant experience. Why did so many people emigrate during this period and, upon arrival, how did they navigate their new lives in America? The Progressive era saw a lot of immigration. There were many things that contributed to the mass emigration during the Progressive era. There were more economic opportunities in the United States. People were drawn to the expanding industries and to a higher paying wage with improved living conditions. There were also many immigrants who faced religious, political, and social persecution in their home countries. America was known as a land of freedom. The mass immigration was also contributed to chain migration, which was caused by established immigrant communities that often sponsored and assisted new arrivals. People who had already immigrated to the United States encouraged their family and friends to follow They did face a lot of challenges once they arrived. There were language barriers. Most newcomers didn’t speak English, and that made communication difficult. They face hardships in trying to find employment and in trying to maintain their culture while a lot of children attended schools that promoted Americanization. Another obstacle was the overcrowded housing, poor sanitization, and inadequate living conditions. Many lived in tenements and slums. Although they faced many obstacles, immigrants played a huge role in shaping American society. They brough diverse skills, knowledge and cultural
contributions. The things they contributed to America enriched America and really contributed to its economic growth.
