Dr. White described the three main planks of the American System in his presentation. Describe these three planks and explain some of the objections raised to each of these points by opponents of the Whigs.
Your Answer:
The first plank was the Bank of the United States. The Whig party believed that we needed a bank in order to handle all of the banking in the country. There were two Banks
of the United States, the first created in 1791 and the second in 1816 because the first expired. The second plank was high tariffs to protect the American's that created and sold their goods within the states. This was to keep foreign goods at a low and shift the citizens to buy their goods from locals. The last plank was building internal improvements like roads, canals, and railroads for transportation in the United States. Good start! However the instructions also asked you to explain the reasons that political
opponents argued against these concepts. Make sure you answer all parts of the question.
