CJ- 140 Unit 5 Project Shane Pratt Southern New Hampshire University
Unit 5 Project Verbal Strategies Corrections Worker The verbal strategies I would use with fellow corrections workers are to speak to them clearly. I would also be sure to include all details of the scenario. Keeping a professional manner I would be clear and concise in my instructions to be sure my fellow corrections workers understand my instructions. Female Visitor When speaking with the female visitor I would keep a calm tone of voice. I could tell by her bouncing her leg during the visitation with her husband that she was already nervous about the encounter. Keeping a calm tone of voice will help her to remain calm. I would build a rapport with her by explaining what was happening. I would try to build trust with her by explaining what was happening and what was about to happen. I would also explain why I feel her children shouldn’t be present in the room and why we escorted them to a safe place. I would assure her that her children would be right across the hall and were in no danger. I would be clear and concise when speaking with the female to insure she stood everything that I was saying. I would also have an interpreter present if she has trouble understanding English since her and her husband were not speaking English during the visit. Children When speaking with the children I would use simple words and short sentences so that they understand what I am saying to them. I would use a calm and friendly tone when speaking
with them, so they remain calm. When speaking to them I kneel down so that I am at their level. Being at their level makes them more comfortable and is less intimidating to them. I would assure them that they are safe and that I need to talk with their mom alone. Inmate When speaking with the inmate I would use a calm but assertive tone of voice. I would speak to him clearly and concisely to be sure he understands everything I am saying to him. I would make sure my instructions to him are clear, so he understands exactly what I am asking him to do. Nonverbal Strategies Corrections Worker With the corrections workers, the nonverbal strategies I used are silently signaling the correction officer at the exit and hand gestures. Silently signaling the correction officer at the exit is to have another officer help monitor the interaction between the inmate and his wife. Hand gestures are used to signal which room to put the female and her children in. Female Visitor With the female visitor I will use direct eye contact. I would be attentive, so she knows I am listening to what she has to say. I would also use hand gestures to direct her into the room and to show her where her children will be going while we talk to her. I would have a calm demeanor and body language so she remains calm. Children The nonverbal strategies I would use with the children is to have a relaxed and friendly demeanor, so the kids remain calm. I kneel down so I am at their level to help them feel calmer

and so I don’t seem intimidating. I will use hand gestures to show them where they are going while we talk to their mom. Inmate When communicating with the inmate I will have a stern facial expression. They need to know that I am not playing any games and it is a serious situation. I will also use hand gestures to help explain the situation. I will have a calm demeanor to help keep the inmate calm as well. My body language will show assertiveness. Communication Styles and Approaches Corrections Worker I adjusted my communication style with my fellow corrections workers to include police jargon. This helps me to know the other workers understand what I am trying to communicate to them. Female Visitor I adjusted my communication style with the female visitor to show I am empathetic with her situation. This shows her that even though she is in trouble for bringing contraband into the facility I understand her worries for her children and that we will keep them safe while she is being interviewed. This will help her to remain calm while the children are being escorted to another room. Children When communicating with the children I got down on my knee to get down to their level. Doing this helps them to feel more at ease because I am not standing over them like an
authoritative figure, I seem more friendly when I am down at their level. Also speaking to them with simple words they understand can help to keep them calm and ensures they are understanding what I am trying to explain to them. Inmate When communicating with the inmate I used assertiveness so he understands that the situation was a serious situation. I spoke clearly so that he understood exactly what I was saying to him and so he understood any instruction I gave him. Effective Crisis Communication Techniques My crisis techniques I implemented to de-escalate the situation was using problem solving. I implemented this by looking at the situation and figuring out how to keep the inmate, the female visitor, and her children calm while we investigated the situation. If I would of changed my approach to any one of the audiences I addressed the situation could of rapidly escalated. The inmate could have attacked the corrections workers, the female visitor could of refused to be interviewed causing her to be detained, and the children could of refused to leave or caused a scene which in turn would of made the female visitor uncooperative.
