Alyssa, Excellent post this week! I feel you had a lot of great insights and furthered this week’s discission. Regulator changes can be a great help to your healthcare organization, or it can lead to its downfall. I totally agree that it can very much be a challenge to adapt to new regulatory changes due to needing investments in your time and finances. I thought you gave some great examples of effective project management. I think it’s important for all healthcare managers to have a base line knowledge of what Lean Six Sigma is and why it is so important to building a thriving and sustainable practice. I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future. Dillon Major regulatory changes can be perceived as both an opportunity and a threat to a healthcare organization. A major regulatory change can bring about new standards and guidelines that promote quality improvement and patient safety. It can offer a chance for healthcare organizations to reassess and enhance their processes, systems, and practices. On the other hand, major regulatory changes may require significant investments in terms of time, resources, and finances. Adapting to new regulations and compliance requirements can be challenging and may lead to disruptions in operations in the short term. It could also pose a risk if the organization fails to comply with the new standards, potentially resulting in penalties or damaged reputation. Project management techniques can be instrumental in driving organizational change related to quality management in healthcare. Here are two methodologies that can be considered: Lean Six Sigma is a method that combines Lean principles (eliminating waste, optimizing processes) and Six Sigma (reducing variation, improving quality). It focuses on identifying and eliminating inefficiencies, reducing defects, and enhancing the quality of healthcare services. This methodology employs a structured approach, including defining metrics, analyzing data, developing improvement strategies, implementing changes, and continuously monitoring progress. Agile project management is a flexible and iterative approach that involves cross-functional teams working collaboratively to deliver incremental improvements. Agile methodologies, such as Scrum or Kanban, promote adaptability, transparency, and quick feedback cycles. These methods are well-suited for healthcare organizations that require frequent adjustments and continuous improvement in quality management processes. References American Society for Quality. Ashley, You had a very well written post this week. I found it to be very insightful and engaging. You did a great job at explaining regulatory health compliance and made it easy to understand. I agree that they can be a good and a bad thing. It can be a challenge for treating providers and clinical staff to stay on top of the changes in healthcare as well as regulatory changes. I agree that it can also have a negative effect on care for patients. Six Sigma is a great project management mythology for improving a companies quality management program. I thought you used a great source as well for this discussion. I look forward to reading more of your posts. Dillon Would a major regulation change be an opportunity or a threat in a healthcare organization? According to the Healthcare Compliance Pros(n.d.), regulatory health compliance is a set of guidelines and laws a healthcare organization and providers must adhere to. Regulations are set to protect the patients, staff, and organizations. I feel that a major change in regulations can be a good and bad thing. The change may help a situation that needs to be addressed and patients will get better quality care. However, the change may not have the best effects. Some providers and staff feel that the constant change in regulations impacts the care provider to the patient. A major regulation change may also cause more expenses because of the change, stated Robin Singh (2018). In what ways could project management techniques be used to drive organizational change as it relates to quality management? Project managers play a big role in organizational change. They bring certain skills that can make the change more effective. Those skills are: Communication Leadership Adaptability Problem-solving Time management Here are 2 project management methodologies that could be ideal for quality management at a healthcare organization. Waterfall Methodology- the waterfall method is the most laid out straightforward traditional approach. The project is mapped out for each phase. The waterfall method in healthcare uses charts and has a rigid structure but it points out the difficulties and how those can be addressed. Six Sigma- “The main focus of Six Sigma is identifying and removing causes of defect and suboptimal efficiency in projects.” (LBodarchuk, 2022) When using this methodology project managers rely on quality management, empirical statistics, and expert personnel.
