As healthcare organizations constantly evolve, it can be challenging to stay on top of the latest trends. According to Olden (2019), health science and technology is a growing trend within the healthcare field. He explains that telehealth, robotics, artificial organs, IT, virtual reality, AI, implantable chips, e-health, and smart devices are all growing trends within healthcare organizations. These trends are expected to “improve overall population health, chronic disease management, and clinical decision-making” (p.15). These emerging trends may bring about challenges when it comes to implementation within the healthcare industry. Telemedicine, smart devices, wireless connection, and e-health all face similar challenges. The first challenge that these technologies face involves the need for increased cybersecurity measures (Olden, 2019). As emerging technologies continue to advance, the protection of sensitive personal health information becomes a significant challenge. There is a greater demand for cybersecurity to safeguard patient information and ensure their privacy and security. Secondly, there are several ethical, legal, and financial issues to consider (Olden, 2019). Will these trends reduce the per capita cost of healthcare? Will these trends affect doctor-patient relationships or create more privacy concerns? Olden (2019) also states that navigating social challenges can be difficult when trying to implement new trends. This is one of the most challenging issues facing emerging trends in my opinion. Based on my personal experience, demographics can pose challenges for the implementation of these trends. Factors such as age, gender, education level, and cultural background can influence how receptive people are to new technologies and ways of doing things. For instance, most of my older relatives do not seem to respond well to newer technologies, such as telemedicine and smart devices, compared to myself and other people in younger generations. This can ultimately affect patient experience throughout the healthcare organization if these patients do not respond well to the emerging technology. Introducing new technologies and e-health in healthcare can be challenging, especially when it comes to healthcare staff. Resistance from staff members is not uncommon, particularly when the new technology involves a significant learning curve. In my healthcare organization, we introduced several new technologies over the past year, and every staff member encountered difficulties due to unfamiliarity. As a manager, it is crucial to be mindful of the external environment and any potential challenges that may arise when implementing new trends in a healthcare organization. While there may be several benefits, it is important to consider how it could impact the organization as a whole and take necessary steps to maintain positive health outcomes overall. Olden, P. C. (2019). Management of Healthcare Organizations: An Introduction . Health Administration Press.
