Lesson Plan/Design Subject: Life Orientation Grade: 8 Duration: 30 minutes Learning Outcome: Social and environmental responsibility, health and safety issues related to violence. Topic: Bullying American School Counseling Association Standards (ASCA): PS:A1.6 Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour PS:C1.3 Learn about the differences between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact PS:C1.5 Differentiate between situations requiring peer support and situations requiring adult professional help PS:C1.6 Identify resource people in the school and community, and know how to seek their help Skills: Learners will acquire the skills of recognising bullying around them and having the tools to see what it entails. Values: Learners will acquire the value of respect and caring for self and others. Learners will acquire the value of assertiveness and co-operation. Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to give a clear definition of what bullying entails. Learners will be able to inform people of the three categories of bullying. Recognising bullying around them and its effects. Teaching methods : Question and answers, pictures, class activity, Powerpoint and homework.
Teacher’s role Introduction of lesson What is a bully? Kids bully for many reasons. Some bully because they feel insecure. Picking on someone who seems emotionally or physically weaker provides a feeling of being more important, popular, or in control. In other cases, kids bully because they simply don't know that it's unacceptable to pick on kids who are different because of size, looks, race, or religion. In some cases bullying is a part of an ongoing pattern of defiant or aggressive behavior. These kids are likely to need help learning to manage anger and hurt, frustration, or other strong emotions. Teacher will introduce the lesson by showing learners three pictures of famous celebrities (Barak Obama, Justin Bieber and Tyra Banks) and ask learners who these celebrities are. Teacher will ask learners if they knew that these celebrities were bullied in school. Teacher will tell learners that Barak Obama was bullied in school because he has big ears , a funny name and has a light skin colour. Tyra Banks was bullied in school because she was tall, skinny and has a big forehead. Justin Bieber was also bullied in school because he wore old cloths to school. Teacher will tell learners that she also used to be bullied in school as she used to have a big afro and used to be called ‘Jackson 5’. Teacher will tell learners that she used Learner’s role Learners will respond by looking at the famous celebrity pictures and answer the question of who the celebrities are. Learners will respond to the teacher’s question. Learners listen and observe what the teacher is saying. Learners reply to the question of what a bully is. Learners who answer the question correctly will be rewarded with a chocolate. Learners will listen to the teacher explaining what a bully is. Learners will describe or give an example of bullying that they have noticed at school. Learners will respond to how they feel when they are bullied. Learners listen to the teacher explaining about the three categories of bullying (physical, verbal and emotional). Learners work in pairs and match the picture scenarios in the worksheet to the type of bullying in the category. Learners will do the first one as an example with the teacher. Learners work on the worksheet for five to ten minutes.
Learning activities and assessment: Type: formative Tools: worksheets, pictures, Powerpoint. Forms: discussion, observations and worksheets. Method of Assessment : School Counselors will assess through discussion and work sheets. Peer will also assess each other when they are working on a worksheet. Pre- Assessment: I asked the student what bullying is or if they had an idea of what that word meant. Also, Post assessment, I asked the students again the three types of bullying and have them explain it to me. Learners with barriers to learning: some of the learners don’t understand English and therefore English and IsiZulu will be used interchangeably to assist learners. Expanded opportunities: a guest speaker can be organised to talk to the learners about bullying. Counselling can also be made available to learners who have been victims of bullying and those who have been bullies themselves.
