Shay Jackson 9/10/2021 NUTR 318 Dr. Fletcher Field Exploration Activity and Reflection Paper Helping people has always come naturally to me. That is why I have also wanted a career in which I could help people. Having struggled with mental health issues myself I decided I wanted to study psychology and be able to help others to give back to the field that has helped me so much through out the years. I haven’t exactly narrowed down what I 100% plan to do in the psychology field. One main interest of mine is rehabilitation of clients who have been in a mental institution and have been released back into regular population. I feel like they need help balancing getting back into society and managing their medications and learning to care for themselves completely. Nutrition impacts this occupation because it is important to ensure that clients are not consuming things that can have a negative interaction with their medications. For example, when on medications for most psychological issues it is important that the individual on the medications not consume alcohol or drugs, such as cocaine or marijuana. It is also important to ensure clients are eating properly being some medications need to be taken with food. Knowing how medications should be taken and what to avoid consuming so that there is not a negative effect when mixed with medications.

I discovered this company through my advisor suggesting I apply to work there to gain more experience in the psychology field. I chose this company because they have many different categories in the psychology field. I felt like the company having more options in the psychology field would give me a chance to explore more options and learn what works for me and what does not work for me. After exploring this company, I have gained an understanding of how nutrition plays a role in helping psychiatric patients and managing their medications. It also has shown me that when clients don’t take their medications it can affect their nutrition through them not being in the right state of mind to properly eat and care for themselves.
