HLTH 616: Health and Wellness Coaching Quiz 4 Please write short answers to each of the following questions. 1. Discuss the three elements of self-compassion by Kristin Neff. (4 points) a. Dr. Neff's self-compassion study focuses on three key components: mindfulness, self- kindness, and a common humanity. i. Mindfulness – Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the present moment. It requires being aware of each moment-to-moment experience in a clear and balanced manner. Being attentive entails being aware of the reality of the present moment. It is the knowledge of all thoughts, experiences, and emotions without rejecting or resisting them. Rather than avoiding negative thoughts and sensations, mindfulness may assist us in confronting the reality of our experience, even if it is difficult or unpleasant. It provides us with the mental clarity to respond in a unique manner. ii. Self-kindness - Caring for oneself in the same manner that one cares for others is what self-kindness entails. It is encouraging and supportive for us to protect ourselves from danger. When external life circumstances are difficult to bear, self-kindness is the decision to comfort and console oneself. Rather than criticizing ourselves, we offer ourselves love and unconditional acceptance. Self- kindness includes loving and patiently treating oneself, especially under tough circumstances. iii. Common humanity - Self-compassion is based on a sense of connectivity. It is acknowledging that all humans are imperfect works-in-progress, that everyone fails, makes errors, and faces adversity in life. Because we are not perfect beings, we must learn to accept and forgive ourselves for our shortcomings. Self-compassion recognizes the inevitable truth that everyone, without exception, suffers in life. Common humanity reminds us that while sorrow is a part of the shared human experience, every moment of suffering can be converted into a moment of connection with others. 2. Imagine if a client comes to you and says “I am having a difficult time to quit smoking. I have tried so many times but it’s just not my thing. Whenever I feel stressed, I just cannot resist myself and I start smoking again” . Demonstrate your response to this client as a health coach with empathy, pity, and sympathy (Note: Provide three different responses: How will the coach respond with empathy, coach with pity, and coach with sympathy). (4 points) a. How I’d respond with empathy i. “I couldn’t imagine being in your shoes. You’re definitely doing a better job than I could see myself doing.” b. How I’d coach with pity i. Pat them saying “oh goodness, I can’t believe this is so difficult for you. Surely there is a way to make it easier.” c. How I’d coach with sympathy i. “I am sorry you are struggling with this habit, I am beyond grateful it’s not something I have to worry about in my life.” 3. List only four steps of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) (2 points) a. Observation b. Feeling c. Needs d. Requests
