After reading the circumplex model, I realize my family is Flexible and Separated. While my sister and I didn’t have a regular up bringing it is had made us more independent than dependent. We learned to not depend on our family very young because we were forced to separate from my mom due to my dad being sick, so we were basically passed around in different care of different family when we moved to Tennessee. Although as kids we saw some of our life as normal because we were eventually able to reunite with our mom and grow with our family in Tennessee, it felt normal since we were able to celebrate all holidays, birthdays, and all gatherings. As years went by our mom did her best to balance being a single mom with little to no help while trying to make sure she gave us anything we need which this also influenced our independence we had to learn to make some simple meals and getting dressed. If I could change something about my family, it would be the time we have spent worrying about things that had no importance. I would probably want my family to be structured and connected so that we could all better understand each other but still somewhat depend on one another it be nice to know when to support and change when needed. I believe that the fact that flexibility is I would describe is a give because we do share leadership within us, I don’t see us as being a family that choose on person to lead us, and we do our best to always share rolls within the family. I know when we got to our teens my mom became very rigid and we really didn’t do a lot of what girls our age would do so I know she is passed that stage of life with us but now she is a little controlling when it comes to us being able to make adult decisions whether it be our relationships or the way we deal with our finances. I do believe there are family members in my family extended to be specific that are too controlling. Some that still now won’t let their kids go places with friends or judge them for making decisions about their body’s health. For example, my sister-in-law decided to get an anticontraceptive for regulating her menstrual cycle but also to avoid having to make a tough choice, her mom did not agree that she hadn’t considered her when making the decision to take care of herself. I think my mother-in-law should have “assessing the accuracy of their inferences about someone’s feelings by asking for clarification.” This would be a good start for her and her daughter to develop a more connected relationship with she has high loyalty in her daughter. Overall, “Balanced couple and family systems (structured and flexible types) tend to be more functional over time.” Within my spouse and daughter I do my best to make sure we are balance to offer a more structural relationship to my daughter so she has something to look up to.
