Skinfold Sites: Abdominal: Vertical fold; 2 cm to the right of the umbilicus Triceps: Vertical fold; posterior midline of the upper arm, halfway between the acromion and olecranon processes Biceps: Vertical fold; on the anterior aspect of the arm over the belly of the biceps muscle, 1 cm above the level used to mark the triceps site. Chest/Pectoral: Diagonal fold; one-half the distance between the anterior axillary line and the nipple (men), or one-third of the distance between the anterior axillary line and the nipple (women). Medial calf: Vertical fold; at the maximum circumference of the calf on the midline of its medial border. Midaxillary: Vertical fold; on the midaxillary line at the level of the xiphoid process of the sternum. An alternate method is a horizontal fold taken at the level of the xiphoid/sternal border in the midaxillary line. Subscapular: Diagonal fold (at a 45-degree angle); 1-2 cm below the inferior angle of the scapula. Suprailiac: Diagonal fold; in line with the natural angle of the iliac crest taken in the anterior axillary line immediately superior to the iliac crest. Thigh: Vertical fold; on the anterior midline of the thigh, midway between the proximal border of the patella and the inguinal crease (hip). Males: Chest, Abdomen, Thigh | Females: Triceps, Iliac Crest, Thigh Skinfold Procedures: 1. Measure on the right side of the body while the subject is standing 2. Maintain pinch while reading, but do not wait longer than 1-2 seconds 3. Take each measurement 2x, if they differ by more than 1-2 mm, retest 4. Rotate measurement sites for skin to recover. BMI Calculation: Body weight kg ÷ height m 2 = BMI kg/m 2 EXS 283 Lab #2 – Body Composition (ACSM Guidelines) Lab Instructions: Collect body composition on 2 individuals using waist-hip ratio, BMI and skinfold measurements. Name: Cara Wlodarczyk Date: 9/6/23
Client #1 Low Moderate High Weight (kg): 68 kg Height m: 1.6 m Waist Hip Ratio: 74 waist/ 105 hip =.705 BMI: 26.6 kg/m^2 Skinfolds: 23.5 mm tricep, 12 mm suprailliac, 27.5 mm thigh Client #2 Low Moderate High Weight (kg): 56.69 Height m: 1.7 m Waist Hip Ratio: 69mm waist/ 96mm hip= .719 BMI: 19.62 kg/m^2 Skinfolds: 5.5 mm pectoral, 14.5 mm abdomen, 21mm thigh What is normal BMI range and what are the traditional factors used to measure BMI? The normal range is 18.5-24.9, it uses height and weight. What is overweight range for BMI? The overweight range is 25-29.9. What is obesity range for BMI? The obesity range is 30 and above. What should we consider when looking at someone’s BMI? We should consider their hip to waist ratio, body fat percentage, and if they are an athlete or exercise frequently, because people with higher muscle mass could have a higher BMI. What is waist-to-hip ratio a strong predictor for and why?
Higher hip to waist ratio means you have more visceral fat, which can predict type 2 diabetes or heart disease. Why should we consider the testing environment during health-related fitness testing? So many factors of the environment or client’s schedule can impact their performance results such as: hot or cold room temperatures (including humidity and sun exposure if outdoors), the client’s hydration and nutrition, and if the client feels comfortable at the testing. All of these factors can impact the results from fitness testing in a positive or negative way. What are the three sites for skinfold % body fat testing for men and women? Women: Tricep, suprilliac, thigh. Men: Chest, abdomen ,thigh. Using the Jackson-Pollack calculation, calculate body fat percentage from both clients. Client 1: 26.4% Client 2: 11.5% When pinching the skin why is it important to shake the pinch slightly before placing the caliper on the pinch? This should separate the fat tissue from surrounding tissues so that we are recording the correct fat measurements. What are the sources of error within the three tests we completed in lab? An error that I noticed might have occurred in my testing or others is that due to my low fat percentage, I feel like sometimes my muscle was being pinched by the caliper, especially on my tricep and thigh measurements. Another source of error could be user error due to simply misreading the calipers or not allowing them to close all the way. What does the waist-to-hip ratio tell us?

Waist to hip ratio tells us if the client stores a lot of fat around their waist, which can lead to heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Note: this lab can also be used partially as a study guide for exam 1
