Student Success Model Adapted from Kerry Hammock Purpose Internal Factors : It may be difficult to identify an internal factor of purpose that is as strong as a direct commandment from the Lord that requires our obedience. But, internal factors of purpose are perhaps the strongest factors because they strike to the very core of our values. What do you want from your university education? What drives you to do good work? How do you see your life being different because you did your best work during your college experience? External Factors: The external factors that drive students can have great impact on a student’s academic success. The promise of a new car, being able to let high school teachers know of your success, making parents proud, and even long term career success are all external factors that many new students possess when they come to the university. What benefits will come to you as you succeed academically? Motivation Motivation is defined as the desire to do good college level work. Under this definition of motivation, it is difficult to measure someone else’s desire since it is an internal emotion. Where does your desire come from? Do you truly want a learning experience? Will you be satisfied with just getting a degree? Is our desire driven by the avoidance of lesser opportunities? Is our desire strong enough to help us do the level of college work necessary to get us where we want to go? Ability A s we examine abilities, let’s consider the skills and characteristics you had when you came to college. Ability determines how well you perform a variety of academic tasks such as time management, note taking, reading, test taking, memorizing, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. How well do you perform each of these tasks? Commitment Commitment is defined as the necessary follow-through to get where we want to go. What is your commitment to doing good college-level work? What causes you to murmur and where do you find strength when the going gets tough. When you have setbacks, do you have a plan? Spiritually, how do you find strength? Who’s there to give you a boost w hen you need it?
