As educators, our primary responsibility is to provide quality education to students. To achieve this goal, we need to ensure that our teachers are delivering their best efforts. However, when teachers are underperforming, we need to provide them with adequate support and opportunities for professional growth before considering termination. This approach not only benefits the teachers but also helps us as leaders to fulfill our professional responsibilities. Observations are critical in evaluating the effectiveness of an intensive assistance program. We need to notice the level of engagement from the educators to determine whether they are actively working to improve. If we pour in support for educators, and they show no indications of trying to improve, it is time to consider termination. We cannot compromise the quality of education we provide to our students. As effective leaders, we must resort to termination as a last resort. We should work to support the teachers in every possible way to help them prosper in the educational environment. We can involve multiple support staff in the support process and document their efforts to help the underperforming teacher. We can establish check-ins to review the effectiveness of the current strategies and support. If underperformance persists, we can revise the support strategies or find other ways to energize and encourage the teacher to make a more substantial effort. Support focusing on confidence building can help to re-energize educators. By having a sit-down meeting with the entire leadership team and collaborating with the instructional coaches, we can offer the essential means to grow professionally. It is our professional responsibility to strengthen the staff and students through continuous support. When considering the final decision for the teacher, we should involve the leadership team in the process. They work with the teachers daily and know the amount
of support and strategies they have poured into the teacher. By taking a collaborative approach, we can come to an educated decision based on observing and documenting the support provided. In conclusion, we should support educators with the necessary means to grow professionally and provide continuous support to ensure quality education for our students. We must take a professionally considered approach while evaluating underperforming teachers before considering termination.
