Healthy Weight Assignment (Type your answer) STEM Part I – Nadine’s Story (20 points) Nadine is a 21-year-old college student who wants to go to nursing school. While she knows it is important to eat a balanced diet, Nadine still skips breakfast or lunch several days a week. She finds that with her busy class schedule, working, studying, and spending time with her friends and family, she simply does not have time to prepare a meal at home. Like many young women, Nadine is concerned about her body weight and shape. Her BMI is 27 and her waist circumference is 36 inches. Nadine acknowledges that she is not as physically active as she would like to be. 1. In which weight category will you place Nadine (underweight, normal, overweight, obese)? - Taking into consideration Nadine’s BMI, I can conclude that the weight category she should be placed in is overweight. Healthy BMI is between 18.5-24.9, Underweight BMi is 28.5 and less, Overweight BMI is between 25-29.9, and Obesity BMI is between 30-39.9. Therefore Nadine is placed in the Overweight category because her BMI is 27. 2. What conclusions can you draw about Nadine’s waist measurements (healthy or unhealthy)? - Nadine’s waist circumference is 36 inches. In females, greater than 35 inches of the waist circumference indicates an unhealthy lifestyle and increased fat deposition in the abdomen which leads to further metabolic disorders and diseases. Nadine’s waist circumference indicates that she lives an unhealthy lifestyle due to her lack of physical activity and lack of healthy eating habits. 3. What are the health risks associated with her BMI and waist circumference? - Health risks associated with her BMI and waist circumference can cause hyperlipidemia, which is caused by rising triglyceride levels in the blood. Part II: Nadine’s Food Intake (30 points) Nadine’s typical breakfast is sausage or bacon and cheesy eggs with diet cola. For lunch her favorite meal is chipotle burrito (double wrap with tortilla, extra carnitas, white rice, sour cream, cheese, & salsa) and potato chips. Supper is usually meat and potatoes with gravy. Throughout the course of the day, her main beverage is typically diet cola. 1. Do you think she is eating a healthy balanced diet? What is missing from her diet? - Nadine is not eating a healthy balanced diet, she is missing fruits, vegetables, grains, and water. For Nadine to begin eating a healthy and balanced diet she needs to increase her fruit, vegetable, grains and water intake. 2. List the foods Nadine likes to eat that are high in fat. - Foods that Nadine likes to eat that are high in fat include sausage, bacon, cheesy eggs, carnitas, sour cream, cheese, potato chips, and gravy. 3. List all the foods Nadine ate that contained sodium. - Foods that Nadine ate that contained sodium include sausage, cheesy eggs, bacon, salsa, potato chips, and gravy. 4. Nadine would like to modify her burritos to make it healthier. What ingredients could be adjusted to make it more healthful? - In order to modify Nadine’s burritos to make it healthier she can switch the burrito for a bowl instead so that it contains more greens, she needs to decrease the amount of carnitas she adds, she needs to get rid of the cheese and the salsa, no double wrap and switch the white rice to brown rice and add beans. chipotle carnitas burrito double wrap with tortilla extra carnitas white rice sour cream cheese salsa Part III: Nadine’s risk factors for chronic diseases (20 points)
Nadine has just returned from the hospital where her father is recovering from a heart attack. The doctors told her that her dad’s heart condition is very serious. Nadine sets up an appointment at her doctor’s office and has her blood pressure, blood lipid levels, and fasting blood glucose evaluated for the first time. Her results are listed below. Using Nadine’s lab results in the first table, discuss her results (Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglyceride, glucose, and blood pressure). What is high and what is low? - Using Nadine’s lab results in the first table, I noticed that Nadine has high cholesterol levels (300 mg/dL), her LDL cholesterol level is 160 mg/dL which is high considering glucose levels, and her cholesterol level is 30 mg/dL which is very low. 2. List Nadine’s risk factors for heart disease? - Nadine’s risk factors for heart disease include obesity, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, high levels of cholesterol and high blood glucose levels. Part IV: Essay (30 points) Propose a plan to improve Nadine’s condition. In your proposal, include diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Describe how each component of your proposal will contribute to Nadine’s overall health improvement. Your proposal essay must be typed in 12-points Times New Roman, 250 words long, double-spaced). Please be sure to check for grammatical and spelling errors. (30 points). In order for Nadine to maintain a healthy diet she should strive to eat a varied, well-balanced diet that is rich in whole foods including fruits, vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids. She has to cut back on processed, high-fat meals and stay away from sweetened beverages and snacks, this also includes cutting back on fast food meals like Chipotle. A nutrient-rich diet will support Nadine's general well-being and health by assisting her in maintaining a healthy weight. To improve Nadine’s condition she must engage in and make time for both aerobic and weight training activities on a regular basis. She can begin by including jogging, walking, or running for 30-60 minutes each day and progressively increase her length and speed over time.

She can enhance her metabolism and develop muscle with strength training activities, which can help her lose weight. Lifestyle changes that Nadine can do to try and lower her levels of stress is by practicing calming exercises like meditation, yoga, or prolonged breathing. She should also put a high priority on obtaining adequate sleep each night and refrain from working on late-night nurse schoolwork that can affect the quality of her sleep. In conclusion, this new plan to improve Nadine’s condition will assist her in maintaining healthy weight reduction, lower stress levels, and enhancing her overall physical and emotional well-being. Nadine will be able to enhance her level lifestyle and lower her chance of acquiring chronic illnesses by establishing these healthy behaviors and being consistent.
