NHS5004 - Collaboration, Communication, and Case Analysis for Master's Learners Assessment 1 Response Letter Leadership and Group Collaboration Maida Valentin Capella University NHS5004: Collaboration, Communication, and Case Analysis for Master's Learners LoriAnn Pajalich February 21, 2021
Dear Lynnette, Lakeland Medical Clinic Thank you for entrusting me with this great opportunity to enhance the competencies of the staff at Lakeland Medical Clinic. This is a perfect project where I can exercise my leadership, organizational, and emotional intelligence. Reading the feedback from the survey, the biggest barrier the Lakeland Medical Clinic faces is the understanding of cultural beliefs and behaviors. Cultural competencies amongst the staff and leaders at the clinic is very important. Although LakeLand Medical Clinic leadership suggests that workplace diversity is priority, civility in the workplace is also crucial. A healthcare leader should demonstrate clear communication, organizational skills, responsibility, emotional intelligence, and be culturally sensitive. (Erikson 2018) The Lakeland Medical Clinic services the people of the community and staff should be aware of the people the community consists of. For this project to be successful, I will lead collaborative efforts with our clinic staff facing the diversity issues and use my transformational and participatory approach when facing work incivility. (Reed, 2017) I believe Carl Daikeler would be a great leader in this upcoming project. Mr. Carl Daikeler is co-founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Beachbody, LLC. (Debter, 2018) He built an empire in health and fitness for decades being an inspirational leader for millions of people in their health and fitness journeys. He is a perfect example of a transformational leader, exercising his excellent understanding of what his followers needed, challenging them beyond their limits all while joining them in their journeys. (Erikson, 2018) His persona generates charismatic characteristics. Carl Daikeler is a successful leader because 2
he models by his belief of ‘be the product of the product.’ (Forbes 2018) Mr. Daikeler has been able to take the rise in technology and incorporate it into his business to communicate to his followers through social media and turn his empire completely virtual. With new technologies, he was able to pivot his followers, staff, and coaches, and continue motivating them to maintain their own success. Mr. Daikeler has collaborated with colleagues to create a virtual workout gym in the convenience of American homes. (Debter, 2018) Collaborating with Carl Daikeler will be very successful, as we model similar leadership traits. We are accountable leaders, excellent communicators, and we foster engagement with and among our employees. Mr. Daikeler and I may be alike in our leadership styles but our differences will empower us to work together and lead staff at Lakeland Medical Clinic together. While Carl is efficient on strategies and motivating people, I will focus on cultural competencies of the community with the staff. To fully service the community, understanding the culture will benefit the staff in patient care. With full confidence of the patient and including them in their plan of care, the clinic will thrive. (Okpala, 2018) Facing the diversity issues at the Lakeland Medical Clinic, I will create a training presentation via slides that will discuss the culture of our community. This training may take one to two days, with a pre/post survey, open discussion, and a question and answer session. At the conclusion of the training, I will create teams to develop a “meet and greet” fair for the community. One team will create flyers, another will create activities, and another group will create incentive gifts with clinic logos on them (e.g. pens, reusable bags). This will provide the opportunity to engage with the community outside the clinic setting and develop rapport with the clinic staff which in turn will be a segway for employment opportunities to transition diversity in the clinic. 3

For a successful turnover, workplace incivility needs to be addressed. Workplace incivility is defined by Bonnie Monych in her article,“ 6 Ways to Combat Workplace Incivility,” as “low intense” behavior. If this behavior is ignored, it contributes to a toxic environment amongst the staff and staff will unknowingly present this behavior in front of patients. (Monych, 2018) An update in our staff and hiring policies need to be done. Clear and set behaviors of conduct should be included into our policies. Our leaders should model this behavior just as my proposed leader for this project, Carl Daikeler has done so for decades. Mr. Daikeler instilled in his coaches, “be the product of the product.” (Debter, 2018) Behavior modeling is key in success civility in the workplace. It is believed that when modeling or behavior follows the workplace culture, co-workers or staff begin to replicate such behavior. ( Hanrahan, and Leiter, 2014) In addition to the presentation, bi-weekly, in-service meetings in the beginning of the week are necessary. The meetings will be 15 minutes addressing different topics engaging employees on the culture of the Lakeland Medical Clinic, duties, and team objectives and constant review of the skills needed to work as a team at work. The in-service should start by asking questions regarding the topic that is being presented that week, which we will consider a post-survey to gather baseline knowledge of the staff regarding that topic. A post survey consisting of three to four questions will be provided to staff to measure the effectiveness. Depending on the preferred method the staff response may be given orally, or filled completed on the post survey To maintain the civility at the Lakeland Medical Clinic, one-on-one meetings will be ministered on a bimonthly basis with each staff. During the individual meetings, discussions will be facilitated based on the staff's concerns, progress, and their feedback. This engagement will 4
provide staff with a sense of empowerment in their daily tasks and communication with the rest of the team. (Reed, 2017) I have demonstrated my strategies and insight of the diversity issues and work incivility at the Lakeland Medical Clinic. I am positive the collaboration and efforts set forth will bring the community and the staff moving forward to an improved Lakeland Medical Center. I look forward to working with you, the leadership and staff at the Lakeland Medical Clinic, Carl Daikeler, and the community. Respectfully, Maida Valentin 5
