Grinnell 1 Samantha Grinnell CDFS 211 Assignment #3 3 things about physical development in the film I found interesting and why: 1.In the first year of life infants triple their weight and doubles their height. An infant doubles their birth weight by the time they are 5 months old. By the time the infant is 1 year old their weight has tripled. I found this interesting because it is neat to see how fast an infant is able to grow and develop in such a short period of time. I find it interesting that they are able to grow so fast and how it changes and the growth eventually slows down. 2. I found it interesting to learn that the fetus can begin to hear while in the womb. Most babies have an established sense of hearing when they are born. I also found it interesting that they can distinguish between voices and prefer their mothers voice over other women. I never knew that infants were able to hear before they are even born. 3. I found it interesting to learn that at 11 months an infant is able to grip a crayon and start making marks on paper. I know that at this point that infants pincer grasp is developing as they are now able to pick up objects and grasp them, I just never realized that they were able to try and make marks on paper with a crayon at this young of an age. It is interesting to know that they can start working on those fine motor skills through the use of crayons starting around 11 months old. 3 examples of how the film connects to the reading or content from this week: 1.In the reading, powerpoint presentation, and video they all talk about how when you provide an infant with a stimulating environment it helps to promote brain growth. This can be done through a variety of activities like reading, singing, and different types of textures. 2. Both the powerpoint presentation and the video talked about infants taste. They both said how an infant prefers things that are sweet, like fruit. They can make a disgusted face if they try something that is not naturally sweet. Slide 4 of the powerpoint also points out that taste buds develop in utero. The video talks about how an infant can remember something its mother ate while in utero and then can end up liking that same thing because they were exposed to it while in utero. 3. Another thing that the reading, powerpoint presentations and video all talked about was how rapid and infants growth is. All 3 said the same thing about how the infants weight double by 5 months old and triples by 1 year old. This is on slide 14 of the powerpoint presentation. Based on the film and reading, describe 3 ways that sensory development impacts physical development. 1.On page 173 of the supplemental reading, it talks about how “infants need touch and physical contact in order to grow” (Swim, 2017). It also talks about how the neonatal reflexes are
Grinnell 2 triggered by the sense of touch. This means that they would not being to happen without the sense of touch. 2. An infants fine motor skills are developed through the sense of touch. They are able to feel different textures and learn how to grasp things through their sense of touch. Without touch infants would not be able to pick things up and build up their fine motor skills. 3. Sensory experiences help an infants brain to develop. The sensory experiences that are provided to infants help to contribute to the formation of the neural connections in the brain. When the sensory input experienced by the infant is more varied and rich there are more connections formed in the brain which helps to promote brain development. Sources (2010).
